The only ones ive seen are Prince Naz in meadowhall acting all cocky, the woman who played the mum in that emmerdale family who were axed cos they were off soapstars in Debenhams, Mavis off Coronation Street in Rotherham, Steve Threllfall off the Hula Hoops advert in meadowhall, David Hurst of S.W.F.C and Darren Byfield of R.U.F.C and a football commentator asked me where weighing scales were at work (house of fraser) but i dont know what hes called i just recognised him (im not into football.) Has anyone seen anyone whos actually FAMOUS famous?

EDIT/ EMMERDALE CAST..... edited cos I forgot to mention that bit! /EDIT

Hello all,

While working Gatecrasher this saturday I had a surreal evening.
After the guy who plays Andy Sugden walked over and shook my hand, I had another surprise when the guy who played Jason Kirk came over for a chat.
Apparently some of the cast had been to see some Motorcross show at the Sheffield Arena and then onto the 'crasher.
Then popped out the guy who plays Danny, the guy who plays Aly (the kid with a heart condition) and the guy who plays (played) Stephen who is Andy's gay farm friend.

I feel bad that I don't know these guys real names, so I'll just have to refer to them with their character names. 'Danny' decided he was too good to chat with the Republic Doorstaff so he buggered off. 'Andy' shook our hands and also buggered off (I think the head doorman upset him by saying he was just as Ugly in real life).

'Stephen' (who was also in the Full Monty) and 'Aly' stood and chatted to us for a good 45mins to and hour about soap life in general.
We made reference to how good looking the girls who play Chloe and Katie are and that it was a shame they didn;t join them on their evening out.

Apparently 'Stephens' contract is now over and he is no longer in the soap. 'Aly' asked that next time he dropped by could he jump the queue for entry.... it's only fair that I said for him to come and see me and I'll give him the queue jump he wanted.

The guy who plays 'Stephen' actually lives off Ecclesall road somewhere so I should have mentioned to him to drop by the Sheffield Forum for a chat, but in the awe of things I forgot... DOH!

Oh well... there is another Gatecrasher this weekend, so if they come out again... I WILL mention it!

The Chuckle Brothers opened my school fate, many years ago.

When I worked at Meadowhall, I apparantly served someone from Hollyoaks, but not watching Hollyoaks, I wasn't aware of who he was, until the next customer told me.

I rarely see famous people in Sheffield, maybe I don't get out enough. I did see John Parrott last year in Marks & Spencer, and the kid who played Robert Carlyle's son in The Full Monty tried to start a fight with me a few years ago, he was extremely inebriated and was very annoying. I don't reckon that counts though.

Over the years I have seen the following people/celebrities ? in Sheffield
Tricky Dicky (Ian Reddington) from East Enders selling Tee Shirts or badges outside Wednesday Ground on Leppings Lane early 90s
Bananarama (remember them ?) in Grosvenor Hotel early 80s
Various (now ex) World Snooker players also in Grosvenor early 80s
Jack Charlton (while Owls manager) near Redgates late 70s
Michie, Blunkett, Betts and Hattersley (Labour MPs) at various Wednesday matches.
Used to see Martin Ware (Heaven 17) and Archie (Tony Pitts) ex Emmerdale also at Wednesday matches and Park Hotel Hillsborough on match days.
Various (now ex) United players used to go in Royal Oak, Cemetary Road early 80s (Kenworthy, Curran, Edwards, Heffernan etc)
Phil Oakey (Human League) and Martin Fry (ABC) both walking down the Moor on separate occasions.
Naseem and friends in Club Uropa mid 90s
Chris Waddle in Tesco Woodseats and Millhouses
Nigel Spackman (ex United manager and Sky soccer pundit) and Keith Curle ex footballer now Mansfield manager in Tesco Millhouses.
And other soap stars/singers/sports personalities whose names I forget........Oh and Howard Wilkinson (ex Owls manager) was a PE teacher at my school back in the mid 70s.

he has also tried to start a fight with my brother, about 2 years ago, and has a reputation for being a bit of an annoying little ____!

21-05-2003, 00:00
Why did he try to start a fight? Over nothing? he does seem like a mardy sod in emmerdale. Perhaps hes leaving cos none of the cast get on with him, cos he could stay on and do a teenage gay storyline (theyve had gay but not TEENAGE gay) ... sorry im going off the subject a bit

Phil Oakey's around all the time if you know where to look. Also spotted that ginger fella from Corrie who's in the witness protection programme walking past the City Hall the other week, and spied Jarvis and various Pulps on a number of occassions.

I was taught by the real teacher whose character Brian Glover was based on in Kes. He used to clip his toenails whilst teaching us. Went to school with Simon Stainrod, played football with him, went sledging with him and he crashed into a tree and had to miss a United game because of it.

Used to go fly fishing at Morehall Res with Ronald Colman?? who was the youngish fellah in Howard's Way who died young. Swapped a cigarette lighter for a plectrum with Jan Akkerman last year at t' boardwalk. A few years ago just to hold the same plectrum that Akkerman played Tommy & Sylvia with would have been the pinacle of my musical life. Chatted with his bassist who we then saw on a Dutch TV prog called Kopspijkers among others.

My sister used to work at the Arena, the Stakis hotel (now the Hilton) and the Crucible, so she's seen her fair share of famous people.

I think the really famous people tend to stay at the Hilton.

Whilst working there she saw / met Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Victoria Beckham (and her mum & Brooklyn) and lots of other famous people that I can't remember...

He was driving straight down the middle of the road, leaving barely enough room for my dad to get past in his battered old Astra estate. So my dad decided to put his foot down, safe in the knowledge that if we were to have a bump, good old Prince Naseem would come off far worse than us. Needless to say, Naz swerved out of our way, nearly hitting a parked car and my dad carried on up the hill with a contented grin on his face.

Johnny Nelson used to go to our youthy, he was a couple of years older than me. I remember he was a really good disco dancer - I'm sure being pretty nifty on his feet helped him as a boxer!

Also, I remember seeing the ginger-haired guy from Corrie at Wednesday matches before he was that famous. I saw him at Wembley in '93. I think he'd just done the washing powder ad and was just about to do a comedy called "The Crying Game" with Lenny Henry ("Zu zu zu, where's my pants!").

Can anyone name anyone famous from Sheffield? Obviously, there's the likes of the Cockers, Phil Oakey, Def Leppard and the rest, but I mean important historical figures. All we seem to have is Ebenezer Elliott, who (a) isn't very famous and (b) came from Rotherham. We must have spawned someone great, surely?

Ebenezer Elliott may not be famous now but I think it says a lot that all it says on his statue is 'Elliott'. No more. no less. The reason being that everybody knew who he was when the statue was created. If that's not fame - what is?
I admit I didnt know who he was and had assumed that his statue in Western Park was something to do withh the university given its proximity.
I have since done some research and now know that he was Sheffield's 'Robin Hood'. I do however find it surprising that so few people do know of him.

Possibly as famous as Harry Brearley http://www.tilthammer.com/bio/brear.html

Jarvis' parents were both artistic. His mother studied art, but despite some promise, she took up a 'proper job' emptying fruit machines as soon as Jarvis was born. His jovial trombone playing dad was less responsible. He was a small time musician and actor, who enjoyed most of his fame through a tenuous friendship with sheffield's only rock hero Joe Cocker, who was no relation of the family what so ever

Benjamin Huntsman was born in Barton-on-Humber, Lincolnshire, in 1704. He was a clockmaker and set up his own business in Doncaster in 1725. He turned to steel making when he found the materials available were not of a good enough quality for the clock making industry.

In 1742 Huntsman took up residence in Handsworth, Sheffield. It was here that after years of experimenting in secret, perfected the process for making cast or 'crucible' steel.

Benjamin Huntsman died in 1776 at the age of 72 years, he is buried in Hill Top Cemetery, Attercliffe.

He lived in a house at the top of Regent Street, now demolished, and Whiteley Wood Hall, now ruined.
There is a plaque in Regent Street on the rigt hand side coming from West St.
I remember going in a house opposite which had only two rooms: the downstairs wth a sink in one corner and a built- in spiral staicase in the other, leading to the one bedroom above. I think this was a 'back-to-back'

I think these count as quite famous - well important and interesting figures of sheffield anyway!

Thomas Sands
A Permanent Sergeant in the Sheffield Squadron of the 1st West York Yeomanry Cavalry. As a career soldier he served 22 years in this regiment and also 24 years in the King's Dragoon Guards and distinguished himself at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 where the Duke of Wellington defeated Napoleon.

Mark Firth built up a steel works.
He was the founder of Firth College, which later became the University of Sheffield. He also achieved the great honour of being Lord Mayor and Master Cutler of Sheffield.

Francis Dickinson.

one of the soldiers who fought in the notorious Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean war.

The cavalry was wrongly sent into battle only to be slaughtered by Russian cannon fire. 670 horsemen were ordered to charge the enemy and only 195 returned - Francis Dickinson was among them.

Francis was a Troop Sergeant in the Late 17th Lancers and died in June 1898.

Fair enough not right famous to everyone but still not bad!

Very sorry I didn't respond to this before PT, I've only just seen your reply. Funnily enough, I went to Burngreave Cemetery in June for the first time in nearly 30 years and while there we took a picture of Fatty's grave.

I'll post a link to the pic and also try to figure out how to direct you to the grave itself (I need to refer to a map of the cemetery).

I can't believe the biggest star af all has been completely left out...
The one and only John Shuttleworth, who shot to fame with his Top 120 Hit, Euro Pigeon

Its rumoured that he will be recording his next hit in a specially constructed sound proof shed in Aston over the next few months.

His plans to create a John Shuttleworth Theme Park, however, have been delayed due to objections from a local.
"Thes Them Parks bring 'nout but trouble." His next door neighbour but one is reputed to have said.

Fears are growing that his celeb status may soon outshine other famous Sheffield comedians Bobby Nut and Blunkett.

Ted Hughes, the poet laureate

The cult of the personality eh?
Here's to all those who toiled in making Sheffield a great city without ever achieving fame.
Thank God they didn't aspire to queue up all day to audition for X Factor, Big Brother or any other get famous quick vehicles which Britain in the 21st Century seems to value so much.
Long live the ordinary folk who just did things.

Spoke to Emlyn Hughes on a train from Sheffield to London, it was the day England played Argentina in the World Cup, I think he was on his way down for some corporate jolly (as was I).

And spoke to Jarvis on a train coming the other way (I helped him carry his very heavy boxes of records off the train and to the taxi rank; he was afraid to use the station lift because it's "probably just for disabled people and that").

Meadowhall is a good place to spot c listers
I've served the blonde girl from the Human league when i worked in Meadowhall, the London community gospel quoir who were playing with the Beautiful South at the time so met them all as well (got backstage passes and free gig tickets) Also literally bumped into the guy who played the young lad in Queer as Folk outside Marks and Spencer, he was dashing for his train.

It cracked me up when my drunken friend was shouting "is that Vicky MacDonald?" at poor Chloe Newsome when her bloke owned Sola and she used to waitress there. Seen Phil Oakey in there as well.

I used to see Tony Capstick picking up his daughter from school when i was ickle. Cheryl Baker walked past me on numerous occasions when i was charity collecting the other week in Orchard Square and no, she didn't give me any money!!! Her trousers were tucked into her knickers and i really wanted to tell her but her tight waddedness put paid to that!!

I met John Powers at the leadmill post las and at an early cast gig. And who hasn't met Bobby Knutt at some point in their lives???

However none of it tops my mate embarrasing me on a train next to Jane Horrocks in London but that's one for the London forum.

chantrey was an artist/ sculptor, who was from Norton,
Huntsman was the guy who created stainless steel (IIRC)
osborne i think, was one of the steel magnates, too,
and ruskin was an artist (he has a gallery dedicated to him at the millennium galleries)

If I have erred, in my remembrances, I am sure someone will help by correcting me.
