Just been nattering about pies from Leicestershire in chat room, and that Rotherham's county council website says that its famous for some of Britain’s greatest inventions, including the screw-down water tap and the Bailey Bridge

What fascinating things is your hometown famous for ?

Birmingham is famous for having more miles of waterway than Venice :D

I don't suppose they're quite as picturesque (sp?) though

Moved to general as it's not Sheffield specific.

well, Liverpool has two of the best teams on merseyside, Liverpool and Liverpool reserves. I'm actually from a part of Liverpool known as Crosby, where cherie blair comes from, which is nice! Fortunately not everyone in Crosby looks like her. Oh and a load of officers from the titanic were from Crosby too, so I've been told including the commander, captain smith. and there's also Kenny Everett and Anne Robinson. I apologize for the latter.

I'm from Oldham. A railway bridge on the main road in to the town centre welcomes you to "Oldham - the home of the tubular bandage". :D

There is more! It was the cotton capital of the world, the first test tube baby was born there. Lots of famous(ish) people came from there, including Bernard Cribbins, the Buzzcocks, Eric Sykes, Sarah Lancashire and various other Corrie people.

I was exaggerating about Leicestershire pies incase you didn't realise, the only pies from Leicestershire are Melton Mowbray Pork Pies and Pukka Pies who's factory is located just outside Leicester.

Leicestershire is famous for Stilton and Red Leicester though, and loads of crisp and snack manufacturers are based in Leicestershire (Walkers, KP, Golden Wonder and formerly Smiths).

We used to make a lot of socks too, so I'm told.

Historically, Leicestershire is where one of the most significant battles in English history took place. Henry VII defeated Richard III in the Battle of Bosworth field, near Market Bosworth (my home town). The battle put an end to the war of the roses.

Leicester itself is a bit of a hole compared to Sheffield, but there are a few famous people from Leicester; including Gary Lineker, Cornershop, Englebert Humperdink, Mark Morrison, Emile Heskey, Showaddywaddy and Lee from Big Brother 3.

Oh yeah, i believe there was a few lads in a band that caused a bit of a fuss too. I try and avoid that though as it's a bit obvious. There's a lot more to the city than the beatles.

Corby is (apparantly) the largest town in Europe without a passenger rail service, yet it is home to Europe's fastest racing circuit, Rockingham:

http://www.rockingham.co.uk

This may be a myth, byt apparantly, Corby is the biggest consumer of Irn Bru outside Scotland as well :D

I'm from a place called 'The Wirral' just over the River Mersey from Liverpool.

I suppose it's famous for a lot of stuff -

Central Park in New York is based on the layout of Birkenhead Park..

Europes oldest ferry service runs from Birkenhead to Seacombe/Liverpool... (Started by Monks in Birkenhead priory about 900 years ago)

Freddie Starr, Patricia Routledge, Glenda Jackson, Pete Pothleswaite, Paul O'Grady and many others are from Wirral..

England Rugby Internationals Austin Healey, Matt Dawson and Ben Johnson are from Wirral (and went to my school)... as did many Irish Rugby Internationals...

Lever Brothers i think were the first company to make pre-wrapped bars of soap (also the Lady Lever Art Gallery there...)

Starting in 1886, the first underwater railway in the world, it connected Birkenhead, Wallasey and West Kirby with Liverpool and by 1891 had extended to Rock Ferry.

Sugar magnate and founder of the gallery Sir Henry Tate is from Birkenhead.

World War One poet and soldier Wilfred Owen is also from the town.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott went to school in Ellesmere Port, South Wirral.

Former Prime Minister Harold Wilson went to Wirral Grammar School.

Wirral's most famous 'unknown' son is a chap called Crapper, who came up with the greatest modern invention as listed in the top 100- the toilet system. It is the number one invention followed by the computer, the printing press, fire, the wheel, radio, etc.

Other famous Wirralians include Olympic cyclist Chris Boardman.

Birkenhead was also the first town in the world to have a tram system.

AND George Washington's grand parents allegedly lived at The Elms, Park Road, Meols, Wirral.

Shirley Valentine actress Pauline Collins is from New Brighton.

Music hall star Hetty King (who 'sang all the nice girls love a sailor') was from New Brighton.

Nashville king of country and western Charlie Landsborough is from Birkenhead.

Blonde Bombshell from Birkenhead Lily Savage is from ..Tranmere.

England cricket legend Ian Botham and national radio DJ John Peel are both from the area as well.

Paul Heaton lead singer of the Beautiful South was born in bromborough

Ray Stubbs is from the Wirral and a Tranmere supporter

Second Division local Tranmere Rovers have got to the last 8 of the FA cup 3 times in the last 5 years.

Norman Cook (formerly of the Housemartins and now of HUGE Fatboy Slim fame) used to live in Bromborough

The Coral are from Hoylake in the Wirral.

Half Man Half Biscuit are from Tranmere in the Wirral.

Paul McCartney has also lived on Wirral.

Sorry for all of the boring facts!!

Suprised myself there!!

Oh yeah, they are brilliant. But then, I was a student in the mid-80s so I grew up with that shambolic indie cobblers, whereas a young whippersnapper techno bod like yerself would probably just go, "Eh?"

I guess it was their irresistible way with the English language that appealed the most. Here's my favourite HMHB song title...

'The Deep House Victims Mini-Bus Appeal'.

And there are loads more where that came from...

(I'll stop there as this is lurching somewhat off topic. Apologies!)

Stannington has..... Me! As well as one of THE worst bus routes in the UK....

On the good side former Emmerdale star Bobby Knutt used to live up here, near Duffman's apparently, as did Ray Ashcroft who used to be in The Bill a couple of years back, I think he did anyway..... Not to mention the famous Robin Hood of Loxley, who according to me Nan came originally from right here in Stannington, hence the Robin Hood pub which is about 5 minutes walk out of our back gate.
