I was wondering whether anyone can help me, we live in a 3 bedroom council house, we have been living here for just over a year, we are looking to swap for a relatives house that is a 3 bedroom housing association house.
Someone told me that you have to have lived in your council house for 2 years before you can exchange with someone, is this true?
Thanks

yorksguy05 as far as i know you do not have to wait two years before you can exchange. i have never heard that rule unless its a new one

Thanks for your reply maggie, my wife heard it from someone awhile ago when they exchanged, this is going back afew years ago so i don't know if this rule exsists or if it did whether it still applies, thanks.

I think there is a waiting time for housing association tenants (I am one!) before you can ask for a transfer and in my case it was 12 months. This is clearly stated in my tenancy pack, do you have one of these? Does the council's website tell you?

Well the people i want to swap with have been in their housing association house for over 2 years so hopefully there wont be any problem.

I Am Sure You Only Have To Be In Your Council House For 6 Months.
They Will Come And Look Over Your Houses To See If Its Suitable For Exchange. I.e You Haven't Done Loads Of Dodgy D.i.y Etc.
