View Full Version : To drive or not to drive?
slimsid2000 19-04-2006, 14:24 In a couple of weeks' time I am taking my practical driving test for the fourth time. If I don't pass this time my theory will run out.
I am just wondering if there are any people out there who have decided not to bother learning to drive or have given up after failing tests. Do you feel it can be more trouble than it is worth or that driving can be such a hassle it is better to use public transport instead?
More freedom to do what you want whenever, when you have your own car.
PS your one letter short in your signature. :hihi:
Bartfarst 19-04-2006, 14:32 Why the problems needing 4 attempts? I'd be considering a different instructor; a fresh approach or a second set of eyes to see your technique may help.
I remember the feeling of overwhelming freedom I felt when I passed my car test - it was wonderful at 17 to be able to jump into a car and go anywhere.
I couldn't be without a car now, but that's because it would be impossible for me to commute to my job by public transport. Oh, and I'm a complete petrolhead - couldn't be without my cars and bikes.

*Twinkle* 19-04-2006, 14:34 Keep at it slim... It buys you your freedom... No more waiting around for the bus, getting rained on... sitting on stinky seats and listening to chavs at the back of the bus...
Go on... get it sorted!
slimsid2000 19-04-2006, 14:36 LMFAO :hihi: i think all people should have their driving sorted b4 the age of 25- im on the verge of it. it should be law!!
So what happens if you don't pass before you are 25?
Anyway, statistically young drivers (mosrtly males) are the worst ones.
shoeshine 19-04-2006, 14:36 Cheer up slimsid........you may get a female Driving Test Examiner this time......
Would that help you pass?...............:)

I was only messin- i prob wont pass b4 then rate im goin wiv my reversing.:suspect: ur right there are a lot of idiotic young male drivers- best to be late than never so go on- drive. no more gettin on busses
Myself , i couldn't do without a car, although we don't have the local bus services like you do in the UK.
Also i've never known anyone here have to take a second driving test, all pass first time, although i think thats because the kids here have been brought up driving around in cars with their parents, even tots can read the road signs, and most parents teach their kids anyhow before they take the test, also some schools here offer free 'Drivers Ed' programs before the tests.
I've never known anyone to give up because they've failed so many times, it would just render all the money spent on lessons, tests and application fees completely pointless. Now you've spent this much on it, you may as well keep going.
What are you failing on? I passed second time, and that was only because I drove to work and back every single day (accompanied obviously) between my first and second tests, so it was second nature by that point.
Are you practising outside your driving lessons?
My girlfriend failed her first four driving tests simply due to not performing well under pressure (she had undiagnosed dyspraxia so had no effective way of dealing with her nerves) and was pretty much on top of it by the day of her fifth - then they cancelled it because of snow, and refused to extend her theory certificate so she could take the test later. It was well out of order. Then she couldn't afford to (and didn't have time to) do any more.
BertieBasset 19-04-2006, 14:45 what's gonna happen first slim sid passes his driving test or he pulls? LOL
sheff_minx 19-04-2006, 14:47 I agree about maybe getting a new instructor if you fail again - it really does help to get an alternative perspective!
Don't give up though whatever you do, I know its expensive and frustrating, but the freedom of driving when you do pass is unbelievable.
Good luck
banesmabes 19-04-2006, 14:51 I passed first time about 9 years ago and have only driven half a dozen times since. In hindsight I probably wouldn never have bothered to learn (I hate to think of all the money my parents wasted on lessons for me). Ignore all this crap about car's giving you freedom. You just end up working to keep your car! Cars make people lazy and there are already far too many on the road.
SupraSteve 19-04-2006, 14:55 what's gonna happen first slim sid passes his driving test or he pulls? LOL
Maybe if he passes, the choice of car he drives will help him pull! ;)
Had you thouhgt about that Slim? :hihi:

beansforyou 19-04-2006, 15:32 Everytime i've taken driving lessons, I get this overwhelming dression set about me as soon as I get into a drivers seat.
I can drive fairly well, i'm confident ont he road etc, but it's just so so SO boring and sat in traffic and oh my god even typing it makes me want to run away...
*breath*
Thats why i've got a motorbike license
BertieBasset 19-04-2006, 15:38 well, if you can't pass your driving test how about getting a motorbike license, this should mean you can drive a 3 wheeler like a reliant robin, you'll look dead cool in that, what a babe magnet.... ;-)

Did you pass your test then slimsid?
slimsid2000 15-05-2006, 13:10 No afraid not. My record is:
tests -4
passed - 0
failed - 4
my theory has now run out so I am having a little rest from driving but may try again in the future.
SupraSteve 15-05-2006, 13:12 Shame. :(
Keep trying though dude :)
brummieade 15-05-2006, 13:20 would say keep trying, but id be wasting my breath....think public transport is the way forward for you mate.
positives

negatives
