I visited Cleethorpes two years ago at the end of July. It was a fine, if not very sunny, day. You would expect a seaside resort to be in full swing but it was virtually closed down. Half of the shops/arcades on the front were either boarded up or closed. Those that were open were almost empty. The whole place had the feel of a ghost town.
Is Cleethorpes a resort without a future? Is it a victim of increased overseas travel taking money away from UK resorts?
I find it odd that nobody's going to Cleethorpes given that a few months back it was voted that Cleethorpes had the cleanest beaches on the East Coast.
The problem over there is that much like here in Sheffield, parking's a nightmare, and the bit of seafront parking there is costs about £4 a day, add that to the money for ice creams, goes on the outdated machines in the Arcades and the fact that you haven't been if you haven't sampled traditional fish and chips from just down the road in Grimsby, it becomes an expensive day out...
Shame though, if they modernised the general sea front area and tidied it up a bit, it could rival the likes of Skeggie, Brid and Mablethorpe as THE East Coast resort to visit.
I used to live in shouting distance of the main tourist area of Cleethorpes back in my student days circa 1993-1995 so I have sort of a rose-tinted view of the area.

apart from the fact that at least you are bathing in the sea at Skegness (if you can brave the temperatures). it's really the Humber Estuary at Cleethorpes, isn't it?

The days of the traditional East Coast holiday have well and truly gone.
I noticed on a day trip to Bridlington a couple of years ago just how much it was in decline there.
Most of the boarding houses seemed to be shut down in the area near the bus station, the reason, I feel, being that most people these days go further afield, - mainly abroad.
The only business places such as Cleethorpes is likely to drum- up is from the ever-declining day-trip industry.
In the day- trip hey-dey, everyone arrived by train or piled into the resorts in droves off coaches. That was all part of the fun, going as a group.
That hardly ever happens now. We are a nation of cars and don't go in for old-style social events anymore.
Pity.
Yes, Cleethorpes is the mouth of the humber. I've never been too keen on the place. However, it does seem a nice place for long walks if you like that sort fo thing.

They should build a big wall around it, big gates, a big lock and a big sign saying 'we tried'
Let the natives become feral (wont take long) and the land return to nature.

Have they not already :D.
You lot obvoiusly go to the wrong bit, tacky old arcades and crap food places on the front. You need to go up the other end of the beach, have told you before. You can walk for miles and watch the people big kites buggying on the clean nice beach. Mind you it is still full of Yorkies (as my Dad would say) and i am now considered one :o .
