My girlfriend is researching a sea journey between the Port of Rio de Janeiro and Bermuda. We've done a rough calculation of 3436 nautical miles. The journey would be on a large cruiseliner. Does anyone know how long a journey like this would take, or how we could find out? We've spent the day trawling t'internet but to no avail. Some guidance from any nautical experts would be greatly helpful.

Cruisers do between 20 and 30 knots so the journey could take between 5 and 7 days non-stop.

How did you calculate the mileage, don't forget a statute mile is less than a nautical mile. 1760 statute 2000 yards nautical.

On long distances over 500 Nautical miles the distance between two points is a great circle,so if your working a distance between Rio and Gibraltar you have to plot a great circle course which is the same course a radio wave takes. Dont forget the maps and charts you usualy see are mercator, which are produced using a cylinder and a light in the centre which produces a flat map from a sphere,ok for short distances.
Get a globe and measure the distance between two points, divide it by the speed in KNOTS (nautical miles per hour) and get hours of sailing, divide by 24 to get days and hours.

Also a minute of latitude is 1 nautical mile and so is a minute of logitude at the equator but moving away from the equator north or south then a minute of longitude is the cos of the latitude. Example,if your sailing along latitude 45 degrees the each minute of longitude is the cosine of 45.
