Does anyone know if you can still get any proper leaded 4 * petrol in Sheffield ? I'm sure they used to be a select few garages that were allowed to sell it.

There is a website online somewhere that lists it, I will see if I can find it later.

I just used to use an additive and optimax in mine.

Thanks fro the info, normally I use an additive and optimax, thats the best combination my car has been happy running on, I thought I'd treat it to some leaded if any was available.

btw, which additive do you use ? I've been using Millers VSP

I have used millers before but I have also used the shell branded one too. Didn't notice any difference between the two really. The shell branded one seemed to last longer as it is more concentrated.

The problem with four star supermarket petrol is that its often not the proper leaded four star but lead replacement LRP, which infact can damge your engine especially if you've got a turbo set up. Having said that I've not seen LRP for ages and I thought it was being withdrawn because theres little demand for it.

Didn't know there was a different four star, thanks for pointing it out mega monty, I will check it out next time I am filling up and post let you know. New to the classic car game only had car since sept, though I have not noticed any problems with how its run on that four star, but if it can cause long term probs I need to find out now. So many thanks Bernie 54

Yes, a better formulation than lead replacement petrol (LRP) is unleaded with an additive, or if you have an old performance car optimax or similar (for the higher octane rating) plus an additive.

Just looking at Sainsbury's petrol stations in Sheffield via their website and it lists the fuel available and as I thought it looks like its LRP and not the old traditional four star.

Meadowhall Petrol South (http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shoppingandservices/storelocator/store.htm?id=1038)

Meadowhall Petrol North (http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shoppingandservices/storelocator/store.htm?id=1112)

What sort of car are you running ? Yes LRP can cause long term problems and as Skatie has mentioned you would be better using Shell Optimax plus a lead additive. I've never ran mine on LRP ever since it was introduced in the late 90's.

I have got a MGB GT. Used additive when I first got it, but a mechanic working on car for me and who also drives has a classic car which he uses daily, told me about the four star at sainsburys where he himself fills up. Couldnt believe my luck as I dont live far from meadowhall, just shows what he knows. However from now on I will be sticking to the additive, thanks again mega monty

What is the best ratio of additive to unleaded petrol, I always use multiples of ?£5 for example how much additive per £10 of petrol. any ideas?

I tend to work mine out from a full tank, then put in the additive, cant remember of hand how much to full tank.

There are a couple of garages in Castleton which still sell proper 4 Star. It's a bit pricey though at £1.20 per litre.

Hi

White Lane Service Station in Gleadless has 4 star leaded petrol - I fill up my scimitar there. (Ford Essex V6 engine - still likes leaded petrol - and drinks it like party goers at a stag night!)

Thanks, can you remember how much it is a litre ?

It's not cheap - when ordinary unleaded was about 92p per litre, the lead petrol was about 1.05. When I next go past the garage I'll check it out. The scimitar hasn't been out much this year yet, so I haven't had to fill up.

The garage on the left as you leave Castleton towards the Winnats stock 'proper' leaded 4 star, as does the garage on the A619 just outside Chesterfield as you head toward Baslow.

Avoid LRP like the plague. Years ago when tests were done on whether addtives actually work, none of the Petrol companies either disclosed their additive or their petrol for testing.

Worse - if you mix additives it can cause all sorts of problems.

£1.33........not too bad.......been using super unleaded recently and its much better than that ordinary unleaded rubbish....cured a lot of rattles in my engine anyway....every 4th tankful should be proper leaded petrol though....
