View Full Version : Going round in circles...domain forwarding etc...
beansforyou 16-04-2006, 23:50 eveing all, or morning :)
I've been trying to find a bit of free web space where I can put my website, and forward my domain name to.
I've tried Tripod, freeweb & even Yahoo geocities, but once you've signed up and read all the tiny writing, it turns out you've got to pay a monthly fee if you want to be able to point your domain name at the space.
Boo.
So, does anyone know where I can put my little website and have my domain name forwarded to it for free?
I don't need alot of space or any web page building blurb,
thanks
mega_monty 17-04-2006, 00:03 Doesn't your ISP provide you with some web space as part of your connection package ?
beansforyou 17-04-2006, 00:17 I'm with Bt Yahoo option 1, i've already spent 2 hours trying to find any relevant info on their website as I did notice (when I searched on google) it stating I'd get some web space but the only thing I managed to find was Yahoo Geocities, which you can't forward your domain name to (for free anyway)
If anyone knows different please let me know :)
Yep, when you look at the different options BT does, it shows you you get 15mb website space with option 1.
But I can't find anything else anywhere on the BT website regarding that website space..... :help:
mr.blaze 17-04-2006, 08:04 Try: ftp.btinternet.net
And have a read through all the bumph your ISP sent you when you signed up - the relevant info may be included in there.
beansforyou 17-04-2006, 10:19 HIya,
It is looking like the 15mb of free web space they advertise is actually just a space at Yahoo Geocities, which I think is a bit of a con, as you can get that for free anyway.
Again I'd have to pay to forward my domain name to it, are there no sites that allow domain name forwarding without having to pay? I don't mind having the adverts on the site and don't require spoon feeding through building a web page.
You can forward your domain name on to any site you like - the company you buy the domain name from should allow you to do this. As for free hosts, take your pick really.
Phanerothyme 17-04-2006, 11:18 If you can live with the domain names available, have you had a look at http://www.dnydns.com
Here you can set up a free static or dynamic dns entry under a subdomain of one of their chosen domains.
I use this for phanfm (http://phanfm.kicks-ass.org:16000/listen.pls) and have, in the past, used the service to point domains at my computer at home as well as to other webservers.
beansforyou 17-04-2006, 11:30 Hiya,
I've just signed up with jamroll 'touchwood' it's what i've been looking for

http://www.dyndns.com ?

Easily do allow me to forward my domain to anyone I like, but the web hosting sites don't allow you to forward it to the web space (give you an IP address?) unless you sign up to their pay monthly schemes.
ah, i see. what about going from the other angle - have you looked at hosting at home?
beansforyou 17-04-2006, 12:21 ooooh, how do I host at home?
It's simpler than many think - a quick Google on hosting at home should throw up a couple of tutorials. In essence the basics seem to be to get IIS running on a PC (XP'll do it - Control Panel>Add Remove Windows Components) and if your ISP changes your IP occasionally (a lot reserve the right to but seldom do) then sign up with dyndns (or similar). Then you can host your website on your PC and each time your IP changes, dyndns will redirect users to the correct IP. You'll need to configure/check your router to allow people in and check your ISP doesn't forbid/discourage it, and obviously the host machine will need to be on whenever you want people to access it, but I know a lot of people who do it (me included).
I've not read all the way through this so can't vouch for it, but if you're game this article may be of interest:

beansforyou 17-04-2006, 12:34 thanks for that i've bookmarked it, i'll definately consider it if this jamroll thing doesnt work out.
Jimbob1989 17-04-2006, 17:30 I could possibly host the site for you if you want? have a decent hosting package for a few sites I run. Fire a pm over to me if your interested.
Theres also www.freewebtown.com
Hiya,
I've just signed up with jamroll 'touchwood' it's what i've been looking for
thanks :)
Jamroll are class and get two big thumbs up from me
beansforyou 17-04-2006, 23:38 *sigh*
I wish I had seen your offer sooner jimbob, as it is, I have given up and paid Easily (where I bought the domain name from) to host my website.
Even now though after another few hours, I can't get my website up, i've redirected the domain name to point at my Easily webspace, i've uploaded my index.html file...and zilch :(
I never had these problems when I used Freeserve and Terrapin ftp, it was tricksy but a doddle once you knew what you were looking at (or had a lucky guess  )
Whats really irritating me right now, is that there are about 4 buttons to press on the Easily control panel, they make it look so...Easy, so WTF won't it work??
sorry peeps, I don't mean to be rude, thankyou for your comments and stuff :)
Jimbob1989 17-04-2006, 23:44 When shiftin domain names about, it sometimes takes a while for the DNS to catch up :)
beansforyou 17-04-2006, 23:49 it's ok i've done it at last :D
Hooray! Glad you've got it up and running.
beansforyou 18-04-2006, 08:08 Just got to think of some amazingly witty & uniquely informative content now
Thanks again everybody
