Hi everyone

Does anyone by any chance remember my grandmother, Alice Phillips/ Hancock who was an Elementary School teacher in Sheffield in the 1940's? Alas she died in 1942 when she fell down her cellar steps. I would love to know which school she taught at. All I know is that she lived in Rossington Road Sheffield and was 49 when she died. Her married name was Phillips but she may have been teaching under her maiden name Hancock as she and her husband were seperated at the time

Any information would be very gratefully recieved

Can't help directly - hopefully there is someone out there who'll recognise the name. However, if not, do you know whether there was an inquest into her death? I'm thinking that since it was an accident and unexpected, there probably would have been. Her death certificate will show whether there was an inquest or not - have you seen her death certificate? - if not, that will be easy to get hold of. If there was an inquest, coroner's papers are closed for 75 years, so you wouldn't be able to apply to see them, but local papers usually reprted inquests, so the next step would be Local Studies library to see the old copies of the Star. I am thinking that any newspaper report might have mentioned where she worked. Any use? Please pm me if you think this is worth a try and want any more information about how to do it.

Yes thank you I have got her death certificate which states that an inquest was held on the 29th April 1942. As death occured on the 28th and the certificate was issued on the 30th it must have been a very "open and shut" case I would think. Bearing that in mind I am a little at a loss to know where to go to from there, as I would think it unlikely that a report would have been compiled for the local newpaper.
Thank you anyway and if anyone else recognises the name I would love to hear

I think the short time between death and inquest is typical - still worth checking the Star if you can
