Ive had my little terrapin for a few months now and have just been feeding him dried food that I bought when I got him.
I was just wondering what else I could give him thats a bit healthier and that he mite enjoy more?

found this if its of any use:
the best diet for captive terrapins are the pelleted foods especially prepared for them. Pelleted fish foods are similar and can also be offered.

Hi,
Terrapins love to eat various foods, i.e the standard pellets or as you can get the turtle food.
Through personal experience and books i have found that they love to eat Prawns which you can buy frozen by the bag from such places like Jack Fultons.
Also the occasional slice of Banana and even a tomato adds variety to their diet.
A whole tomato is ok as they will play with it first before getting to it but it livens them up.
Terrapins go crazy for Cat Food too! (Yes i did say cat food) it's like a delecasy to them and sends them wild (chunky kind is best).
You can also feed them Fish as this would be part of their natural diet and if you can bear to do it you can feed them live (i can't tho & wouldn't).
If you feed your Terrapins foods as listed
Banana Slices
Cat Food Chunks
Prawns
Whole/Sliced/Baby Tomato's
It best to feed with plastic tweezers and definatly not by hand as you will get accidentally bitten.
But the idear is if you hand feed prawns and other foods once your Terrapin gets full hell leave the food on the tweezers alone and it saves you having to fish rotting food out of your aquarium and stops your water stagnating
Awww I want one now. I went to a pond equipment etc place at the weekend and they had tiny turtles for £150. Bit expensive, are terrapins cheaper?

Terrapins are alot cheaper! several shops in Sheffield have them starting from £12.50 upwards - they are pretty common so the ones you're most likely to come accross have red marking either side of their face also known as red eared sliders.
Two main shops in Sheffield are at Attercliffe on Attercliffe Road- 1 is
The Snake Shop (0114) 2423007 and www.thesnakeshop.co.uk
the other one is
Sheffield Exotics (0114) 2446662
Baby ones are only about 1ich long but will grow huge eventually.
Hope this helps everyone.

When Terrapins/Turtles get hungry they'll nip at anything that is bobbing in the water and naturally go to drag it underwater to drown it.
In the wild they will eat just about anything but can't imagine anyone keeping Ducks in their lounge aquarium.
They will however nip/bite anything partially submerged when hungry as this is how they catch such bugs but will do the same to Fish fins and Duck legs if they brush past them! this is a natural response.
If you do want to keep Fish with any Turtle/Terrapin please make sure that the fish are considerablly larger than the Terrapin i.e 2 to 3 times the terrapins length as this will ensure they wont become food!
Please note that they may bite/nip chunks off the Fishes Fins occasionally tho.

turtles & terrapins eat differnt food depending on what sex they are & what stage of life they are in. females tend to have a more vegie diet & males a more carnivourous diet. when they are little they tend to eat meat more than veg, i couldnt get my male to eat veg at all within the first year though he will eat anything now & is mainly omnivorous.
turtles need a varied diet just like ourselves. i tend to give my turtle what i eat so if i cook a sunday dinner i'll give him a little meat & some veggies. mine likes salad, he'll eat tomato, cucumber, peppers, he will eat leutice but its not really worth giving him any as it has no nutritional value. he likes veg, i try him with a bit of everything basicly, the only veg i dont give him is sprouts because i read somewhere that it has something in that dosent agree with turtles. he will eat fruit too, my turtle loves apple tho i have never tryed him with banana. he is also a big lover of fish wether it be salmon, mackrel, cod etc.
i will occasionally buy him those water plants from aquatic centres or PAH, they are faily cheap & my turtle loves them but i'm not overly kean because they cause havoc with the filtration system. i also buy him dryed white bate, you can buy it in asda in the pet asle as its actually ment as a cat treat but my cat hates it yet the turtle love it.
i do have a few ruels though, i wont feed processed meat like burgers or sausage as they have too high fat & salt content, i will only feed fresh cooked meat like off a sunday roast or chicken breast. if i make something like spag boll i will take out some cooked plain minse before i add any sauces for the turtle. never feed live fish, its actually illegal in the UK. never feed any dairy products, reptiles cant digest lactose. i try to have a higher number of vegg based food because the high fat & protine of meat can cause problems for the turtle. i try & cover all his food in cuttle fish powder (just get a cuttle fish & scrap a bit over the food) so i know he is gettig enough calcium.
i do feed comercial turtle food occationally i just dont stick to one diet foods like this. i wouldnt want to live my life eating the same product every day whether it was nutricinally ballanced for my needs or not. a nice healthy varid range of foods leads to a happy healthy turtle.

The above is expert advice! My son got one of these turtles, it was cute with a snorkle snout. Then as it began to get bigger it got quite snappy.
It now lives in a huge tank and I dare say it would eat a cat if given half a chance.
Seriously they like special pellet food and the odd prawn as a treat but I'm no expert.
