Anyone remember something called 'the good old days' or something like it? It was a variety show type thing . . with lots of acts on stage.
This was the best time for me to leave the house as the rest of the family liked it and i just thought it was a pile of poo.
THE GOOD OLD DAYS (mid fifties to about 1983)
BBC
I ALWAYS used to think that COCO Eurovision entry was about this oddball Victorian music hall tribute effort. Basically, various acts pretended to be Victorian in an old-tymey presentation "From the Stage of the City Varieties Theatre, Leeds" with the audience dressed similarly in parasols/bustles etc. LEONARD SACHS had a gavel and introduced each act with comedy long words and the audience (who had waited years for the opportunity) would go "ooooh!" Sorry, was there a point to all this?

Ma and Pa used to watch it. It was followed usually by "The Black & White Minstrel Show". Those saturday night shows always filled me with doom and gloom. My Dad also used to listen to "Sing Something Simple" on Sunday afternoon radio. This too filled me with feelings of daeth and mortality. Don't know why !!!

Trivia point - Leonard Sachs was the father of Andrew Sachs, "Manuel" in Fawlty Towers.
Sorry, but Leonard Sachs is NOT the father of Andrew Sachs - "Manuel" in Fawlty Towers.
Andrew Sachs was born in Germany and only came to this country around 1938.
Remember the programme well.
There was a waiting list a mile long to get in the audience.
One of the regular "artistes" was Danny La Rue, for those of younger years, he was the fore runner of Lily Savage but didn't have such good legs.
My grandfather really fancied him and used to give me such patronising looks when I'd try to tell him he was a bloke.
"Tha wants to get thee eyes tested or wait til thee b***s drop afore tha starts sayin' stuff like that" was his usual reposte.
Believe that the show still goes on in Leeds but way beyond its sell by date for television.
Nowadays we're too sophisticated and fed such high brow delights as "Celebrity Love Island" and "Celebrity Come Dancing".
God i remember that, the good old days, thanks for making me feel so very old. i watched it at my nans, she died when i was 9. only 12years ago. (i wish)

The Good Old Days was great. It should get a prime time slot in BBC1's schedule every night. Forever. I'm not suggesting the Victorian/Edwardian era is worth going back to - it isn't. Generally things are much better now, but this programme was superb. So funny and done in such good spirit. With lovely music as well - what more could one want? Lord Chav and Timo could be the hosts, with their long words and that.
