I'm a massive fan of freeform embroidery, both by hand and machine, but I hadn't come across freeform knitting until fairly recently. Have a look at these links:

Both showcase the work of Prudence Mapstone. The closeups of her work are stunning, and the colours are glorious. I would love to have one of her pieces as a wallhanging. Probably not within my price range though. Oh well. Better get experimenting...
