View Full Version : Caught Speeding.. What now?
Hi all,
Well, after having a clean license for over 3 years I got done apparently on Sunday morning doing 70 on a 60 road. (Been on that road a million times and always do the same speed!)
The worrying thing is, it just said "Notice of intended conviction", and asked me to send a form back saying I was the driver.. But no mention of penalties.
My dad got a speeding ticket for the 1st time in 25 years the other day (and I took the mickey, bad karma?) but it just said he had a £60 fine and 3 points.. Why doesn't mine tell me what my penalty is?
:(
neeeeeeeeeek 13-04-2006, 12:44 where were you??
You should get a "Notice of intended prosecution", but it sohuld give you the option to pay a fine or something similar.
Who did the letter come from?
Is anyone else legally allowed to drive the car?
If so, return the form unsigned saying that you are unable to identify the driver of the car as you can't honestly remember who it was.
Although having said that it was you on here might compromise your defence.
I know it was me that was driving.. It was the road that runs down from the big Tankersley (sp) Manor roundabout down towards the one that leads off to Woodhead Pass (through Stocky bypass etc).

That's the one.
It came from the Police. My mum rang me shouting "You've got a letter from the police what have you been up to this time?!!?!?!"
I was suggesting that you might have lost your memory, but if you're sure...
beansfeast 13-04-2006, 13:21 No way out of it I'm afraid, you need to send the letter back stating you were the driver. You'll then receive a letter back stating most likely the £60 fine and requesting you send your licence away for 3 points to be added...
crookesey 13-04-2006, 13:22 Sounds like a 3 pointer to me, don't worry everyone seems to have points these days. You were going at 16.66% over the legal limit, my two convictions for 38 & 40 in a 30 area work out at 26.66% & 33.33% respectively over the legal limit.
The trouble is that you end up spending more time looking at your speedo than you do looking where your going. At the end of the shift you did it and appear to be man enough to admit it.
If and when you get your points remember to inform your insurance company.
Does that work though? I'm all for a bit of dodgy behaviour, but knowing my luck it'll make things worse! But nope nobdy else is actually on the insurance.. But I could possibly say one of my mates may have been driving it 3rd party as they're fully comp on their own car?

Thanks for the re-assurance.. 3 points I can just about handle but anymore and :(
I've always done that sort of speed on that road, just to keep up with other cars!
Can't the police just look at the picture and see who was driving though?
No one said it was fool proof. You can request a copy of the picture in order to help you identify who was driving.

Sometimes, not all.
Its best not to lie, just own up and take the consequences, which in this case looks like 3 points and a fine.
Ive been there, done that and got a bag of T-Shirts
I got this recently for the first time as well... 14 years of good driving and now suddenly I'm a criminal for doing 8 mph over the limit.
(Shame the police never put as much energy into catching the people who broke into my car and stole stuff from it. I just got a shrug and a letter saying "in future don't leave valuables in your car").
It's horrible, but you're best just to pay the fine. Points stay on for 3 years! What a bummer.

Don't bother with that one. It will end up costing you £335 plus 3 points. I had an honest claim like that, we were away on holiday and didn't get the letter until a couple of months later, couldn't remember who was the driver at the time as didn't see a flash.
It ends up you having to plead guilty to speeding or failure to identify the driver (which I had to do). Either way the longer you try to defend it the more it costs you. Just fess up and pay the £60 or whatever it is.
