View Full Version : My bank is ruining my month!! (or is it me?!)

I'm normally a reader rather than a poster but I'm so mad I just have to vent my rage!

I got paid yesterday so thought I'd be good and pay some cash off my credit card. I thought I'd paid £200 but have today discovered that I actually paid £2000!!

I called the bank who say there's nothing they can do about it. They can't get it back and can't even up my limit for a bit. Worse still, the card company says it will take over two weeks for them to get the money back to me (and as it's an amex card it's not practical to get a cash advance). Apparently I've paid so much more than the balance that an investigation is needed before a cheque can be issued. Something about money laundering.

The upshot of all this is that it's one day after payday and I have only £30 in my bank. I can't see how I can pay bills and rent which are all due on Monday.

I know it's my fault for not checking properly when I made the payment, but I can't believe that no-one can help with this. Agggrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!

Any advice would be welcome.......

Use your amex to buy travellers' cheques or euros and convert to sterling.

You'd get charged commission wouldn't you?
What about a temporary overdraft?

I did a similar thing recently - paid the wrong credit card bill via on-line banking and paid much more than I owed them. This was sorted out easily though - they just did a balance transfer to the credit card company I intended to pay in the first place. Bit different to your situation though - don't know what you can do I'm afraid.

I must say though, that in my experience Amex have been far less helpful than any of the credit card companies I deal with. I had a couple of fraudulent transactions appear on my Amex account and they gave me a right load of hassle over it. I won't bore you with the details but it took some 3 months to sort it out and for a while they insisted I was responsible for it! I closed my account with them as a result. I was an Amex customer for years, but I hate them now!

Similar thing happened some years ago with a credit card company and they were brilliant and sorted it out straight away - even though in that case I had lost my card and didn't even realise until I got a statement with some dodgy transactions on it.

Do you know anyone who needs to do a big shop, or buy any new, quite expensive goods? If so, ask if you can pay on your Amex card and they give you cash/cheque. That way you've got spending money, they've got their goods, everyone's happy.
