View Full Version : Look Leeds
Ned Ludd 28-04-2004, 11:27 Should BBC's Look North be retitled Look Leeds?
Not an original question I know but it's still pertinent.
Weather forecaster and Bradford fan Paul Hudson is of course exemped from any criticism as he is a proper Yorkshireman
This should be in the TV and Movie chat forum really as it's about a TV program.
But yeah they do seem to cover more of Leeds and West and North Yorkshire and Lincolnshire than Sheffield and other South Yorkshire areas :loopy:

Ta, moved.
alchresearch 01-05-2004, 09:50 It's the same everywhere. We have 'North West Tonight' which covers from Derbyshire (Congleton, Macclesfield, Buxton) to Cumbria in the North and Liverpool & Merseyside in the west.
But, most of the news is about Manchester. Perhaps when digital TV is the dominant force there will be seperate coverage?
Calendar's not much better on ITV, we're in Sheffield, which is in SOUTH Yorkshire, yet we get Calendar EAST! Which primarily covers Humberside and Lincolnshire areas, especially Hull it seems..... :loopy:
silverknight 02-05-2004, 13:44 If anyone wishes to return their tv in Sheffield to recieve the ITV 1/YORKSHIRE calender south part of the programme your tv ariel must be directed at the main Sheffield transmitter at Crosspool which recieves its main feed from Emley Moor. I am not sure if the low power relays at Totley rise and Wincobank are linked to Crosspool or Emley Moor.
You will also need to know which UHF aerial grouping you have as this allows you only to turn in to a select group of channel numbers(not to confused with tv stations)
The following is the current allocation for the uk...
Channels 21 to 37 also known as group A or Red
Channels 35 to 53 also known as group B or Yellow
Channels 48 to 68 also known as group C/D or Green
Channels 35 to 68 also known as group E or Brown
Channels 21 to 48 also known as group K or Grey
Channels 21 to 68 also known as group W or Black
The Sheffield Crosspool site is allocated as follows
BBC 1 =31 BBC 2 = 27 ITV 1/YORKSHIRE = 24
C4= 42 C5 =67 ( Note this is transmitted at a much lower signal than the main 4 tv stations)
If you have a DIGITAL tv set or a set top box adapter the numbers are as follows...
an ariel group W is required to recieve all the tv stations
Multiplex 1 (BBC) = 39 Multiplex 2 (ITV/C4) = 53
Multiplex A (SDN) =57 Multiplex B (BBC) = 60
Multiplex C (Crown Castle) =45
Multiplex D (Crown castle) = 42
Note Digital tv is only available on the main transmitters at present due to lack of available channels.
Hope you have found this info of use.
alchresearch 02-05-2004, 19:05 It all depends on line-of-sight. In Woodhouse I couldn't get Crosspool.
My nan in Stradbroke gets Calendar East also.
Sheffield City Hall was on Look North this evening...
As well as 'line of site' for TV reception there's something called the 'capture effect'. The gubbins in the standard terrestrial TV receiver is designed to 'lock' to the strongest signal.
This can soemtimes cause you to get one or other of the two possible versions of a regional TV or FM radio signal.
Years ago I was interviewed for Look North about school budgets in Sheffield. I was bumped off news by John Major visiting Leeds. Another reason why I don't watch Look North....:-)
noseyrosie 27-05-2004, 15:29 Let's all give Look Leeds a big pat on the metaphorical back for a headline story about racism in Meadowhall today. Hurrah!
custardcream 23-06-2004, 11:08 Leeds the only city in the north!! reght then.......i agree Look north (of Sheffield!) is biased towards West Yorkshire
I was in the Gym at Upperthorpe on Monday morning, and they had the TV on showing Calendar South.... Eh?!

We get Calendar East... Which covers mainly Lincolnshire and the former Humberside areas.
May I ask what you get over in Ecclesall?
Calendar South. How silly that in Stannington, one of Sheffields west-most points, you get Calendar East! It will be to do with what aerial your TV picks up. Calendar South gives Sheffield/South Yorks local news. It must be weird getting Lincolnshire news. How novel. :D

It doesn't really bother me... And for your information, Stannington is in NORTH Sheff :loopy:
You need to get out of Eccleshall a bit more..
Rich, I think its just you getting Calendar East. When I lived in Stannington I used to get Calendar South, I now live in Loxley and get Calendar South.
And by the way isn't Stannington a lovely place to live (bah sucks to Geoff :P )

better class of person in stannington anyway:thumbsup:
I wonder if they will still be producing programmes like 'Leeds, Leeds, Leeds' now the mighty whites are on equal footing with United? Who'll get first mention on Saturday teatime?.. mmmm I wonder.
Leeds are getting more attention from 'Look Leeds' then they ever did before. It's like Band Aid all over again - Their little crying faces in the stands as Smith waves goodbye ( & hello to wads of cash ) after the last game.
We really don't care Look Leeds!! get over it - they've gone down, It happens!
At first I used to laugh at their whimpering little faces but now it's getting on my nerves.
noseyrosie 24-06-2004, 22:24 I went past the Look North building in Leeds today...bunch of stupid Leedsy people with their.....LEEDS
I get calendar south too. I get a far worse deal when i'm home in Liverpool. My bedroom TV gets S4C instead of channel 4, so most programs are in welsh and rubbish.
ToryCynic 28-06-2004, 16:59 Which ITV1 Yorks "sub-region" do you get on Sky Dig? (103)
And which BBC 1 North do you get on 101 and don't you get another in the 970's section?
What about analogue do you get a diff YTV on analogue?
I.e we get ITV1 London. But we are in a "border" area. Some others get ITV1 Meridian "South & South East" (known as Meridian "East" sub-region). Which is broadcast from Bluebell Hill - that is what they get on "Ch3" but on "972" or whatever through the digi-box they pick up ITV1 Meridian "South" for the IoW and West Sussex.
A lot of ITV-1 regions are split into sub-regions.
I.e HTV ( now ITV1 West/Wales)
YTV split into sub-regions.
Central - south/East/west
Anglia - East/south/north or is it east/south/west?
Meridian - East/South
Border - Northern England/Southern Scotland
Easiest Way to check which transmitter you are using. Pop up Teletext (ITV1) Page 100 and press reveal.
