View Full Version : Know any Sheffield songs/bands for a compilation?
emujuice 12-04-2006, 10:23 I want to make a compilation of songs about/mentioning Sheffield, or failing that songs from Sheffield bands. This is just to give to a friend who is leaving Sheffield so no arguments on legalities etc... (esp as I plan to download the various songs from itunes etc...)
So far:
Arctic monkeys: red light indicates doors secure (hillsbourgh and high green) and fake tales (hunters bar)
Monkey swallows the universe: Sheffield Shanty
Pulp: sheffield sex city
Artists:
Pink grease (which one?)
Joe Cocker - did he do one about coles corner?
Human league (gotta be you were a waitress in a cocktail bar, as about Hanrahans!)
Def Leopard
Little Man Tate (any suggestions for which one)
Boy on a dolphin mabye?
Milburn
And then I'm stuck! Anyone got any more ideas or know some really good up and coming local bands
Roweshow 12-04-2006, 10:25 The Field - City of Steel
The Long Blondes ... They will have done a song mentioning some area of Sheffield
Richard Hawley - "Naked in Pitsmoor" or "Coles Corner" are both tracks that refer to Sheffield.
He also has albums called "Late Night Final" "Lowedges" and "Coles Corner"
Boy on a Dolphin latest album is called "Barkers Pool to Thunder Bay"
But I am not sure there are any tracks that refer to Sheffield.
Sound like a great idea BTW for a compilation album.
the-lioness 12-04-2006, 10:40 big ang its over now- big ang is a basline house/ speed garage producer from sheffas- the niche scene - that sort of thing.:)

You should use babies by pulp.
The coles corner thing you mentioned is richard hawley not joe cocker..
And try and get french kissing by Vegas child they are from sheffield and its a cool song......
emujuice 12-04-2006, 10:49 Thanks guys this is great! keep it up. I knew there was a song about coles corner somewhere!
I know there are a lot of sheffield bands, but it takes a fan to have listened to the lyrics to see if there are any sheffield references. Ideally all the songs would have some reference, but I'll be happy to settle for just talented homegrow music!
This Fair City by The Tivoli
www.myspace.com/wwwleemcmahoncom
songs are mostly about rotherham but this one does mention the guy sat on a carpet outside the spar on division street :)

Jabberwocky 12-04-2006, 11:15 "The Snake" by Human League, Thats about the snake pass and areas of Sheffield are mentioned in the song.

CherryNicole 12-04-2006, 12:45 Regarding Little Man Tate I think you should put on Court Report it makes me chuckle :hihi: also, What? What you got and This Girl Isn't my Girlfriend. The others are great too but if you only want a few I think these.
Pink Sharabang (www.myspace.com/pinksharabang)
They are from Chesterfield and Sheffield and have a song about riding the 57 bus, called '57', funnily enough.
Also Champion Kickboxer are a good up and coming Sheffield band.
chris@25 12-04-2006, 14:15 In addition to the ones already mentioned:
Fake Tales of San Francisco by Arctic Monkeys mentions Hunters Bar and Rotherham (oh I just noticed you had that one)
Wickerman by Pulp mentions the Wicker, Leadmill, The Moor, Broomhall, Forge Dam and "the old trebor factory that burnt down in the early 70s"
(many other Pulp songs mention local places, e.g., Stanhope Rd in Babies, Weston Park in David's Last Summer, loads more)
Pinch of Psalt by Bromheads Jacket is about the car wash on Psalter Lane (allegedly)
There's an album called Sheffield Steel by Joe Cocker but I don't remember if it namechecks anywhere in the lyrics (probably not).
emujuice 12-04-2006, 17:13 This is great thanks! Still trying to track down some of the tracks in my CD collection before buying online. It's amazing what CDs I have lurking!
Also, looking forward to hearing 57 as that's the bus I used to catch all the time from stocksbridge!

meersbrook 12-04-2006, 22:11 I know it's already been mentioned... but dag-nam it it's PULP! - so I'm gonna mention it again ;-)
"Wicker Man" would be a top choice, and if you need further convincing it's track #5 on their final (for now..) album "We Love Life" and you can hear a short sample from it on amazon's listing right here:
Pulp: We Love Life CD album - click here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005QITW/mounse)
Nice idea for a compilation.
I guess you could also slip in anything from the Full Monty Soundtrack (esp. one of Anne Dudley's Oscar winning score pieces..)
John.
youwhatref 13-04-2006, 05:43 Dont forget ABC! Great band and some great songs. (Look of Love, Poison Arrow??)

True.. but did they write any songs *about* Sheffield (or ones that mentioned Sheffield?) - I think that was the question / requirement, but they may well have anyway - beyond those 2 "classics" I don't know much of their material to be honest!
Cheers,
John.

I went with the 'Failing that..band from Sheffield' section :D
Hopefully those who follow ABC maybe able to help more
'Driving Away from Home' by It's Immaterial namechecks Sheffield, iirc. And possibly so does 'It's Grim Up North' by the KLF. And if it does, it probably ought to heh heh...

S.Y.M.M (South Yorkshire Mass Murderers) - The Manic street Preachers
F'in Welsh idiots - what do they know?!
basket_case 13-04-2006, 11:54 The Longpigs were from Sheffield and had two albums out in the 90's. Can't remember if any of their songs mention Sheffield or not though. There is also a Clash song called This Is England which has a line that mentions a knife of Sheffield steel
*vanessa* 13-04-2006, 11:59 I have a mate that likes Any Trouble, apparently they were from Sheffield - don't know if they had any songs about sheffield tho.
Good Luck

Clash - This is England = brilliant, its on the 'cut the crap' album.
*rumages around for old tape cassette*
basket_case 13-04-2006, 13:23 It's a shame that the rest of the album is literally crap!
Fat Truckers - 'Multiplex' ... bangs on about glut of cinema complexes, Crystal Peaks "and down town 'n'all"..
And what's that Gomez song with the line "We're rolling into sheffield toniii-ight"?
Arctic Monkeys?! Their song "Fake tales of San Francisco" mentions Hunter's Bar, I believe the words are "He's not from San Francisco he's from Hunter's Bar, I'm not quite sure of the distance but I'm sure it's pretty far, yeah I'm sure it's pretty far".
sheff6nic 13-04-2006, 21:28 walk like a panther by all seeing i - you get tony christie on vocals, lyrics by jarvis cocker and music by all seeing i so 3 sheff for the price of 1!!

Hi
I'm a member of the band Pink Sharabang ..
There are several other tracks about Sheffield written and recorded ..
So .. if you need any more Sheffield-inspired songs .. maybe you could check out 'Peace Gardens' and 'Freshmans' .. If it wasn't for Sheffield .. they'd never have been written
Hope you enjoy them .. they're only rough demos atm .. but we're hoping for some record company interest .. if enough people can spread the word..
YOu can hear some of the songs on our my space music profile:
w w w.myspace.com/pinksharabang
Hope to hear what you think ..
hallo!
does it have to be indie stuff?
because theres a rap group called "hoodz underground" u could find em in fopp or somewhere like that, or you could be naughty and dowload it.
They have a song called "hard copy" which metions sheffield and the city of steel in it's lyrics, also various other tunes.
And also search for a Milburn song called "city of signs" its a very old one, goes back to like 2003 so maybe hard to find, its on their early demos, that song is about this marvelous city aswell.
Fraggle Rock by Bison:
"Count your blessings that you're here and now
In Sheffield town
Lots of music, life and love
That won't let you down"
emujuice 26-04-2006, 19:49 Thanks guys! I'm just listening to the rough compliation now, whilst having a bad day at work (i'm still here and it's 8.48!). It sounds pretty good. I'll post the final listing when it's finished, but since people are still suggesting stuff it's a work in progress.
I do very much like the 57. You have a lovely voice. I'll have a gander at y our other tracks. Thanks. It's aways nice to know the origins of a song - i take it you're still loved up :D
