View Full Version : Painful leg cramps ~ anything to do with my driving posture?
*Twinkle* 11-04-2006, 12:13 Over the past few weeks I've had awful cramps in my legs, especially in my thighs and I've felt my knee "locking" on occasions...
I think two things could be to blame... First of all my exercise DVD, which is a bit of a tough one, but I'm always careful to warm up and cool down correctly, and I've been doing it 3 times a week since January, so I doubt its that...
It could also be my driving position... I've never really been told what the correct position is for driving... So I'm wondering if its that... My right knee tends to lock when I'm driving and its ever so painful :( I have quite long legs (I take a 33 trouser leg) and if I push my seat back and drive with my legs almost straight, I tense up and theres a bit of pain in the back of my calves. So I position myself a little closer to the wheel and my legs are bent slightly, I get pain in my thighs... Am I cracking up? :help:
Id woulda thought you'd need to speak to a doctor! There is something u can take but the name escapes me, try stretching more. But doctor definately if theres pain.. There is something to clear it up.. Or someone smarter than me and here will do! :)
funkymiss 11-04-2006, 12:44 It could be sciatica, I think it can make your leg 'lock' like that. It's quite rare in young people though... does your back hurt too, have you ever had a slipped disc?

therapyman 11-04-2006, 12:44 Might be a problem in your lower back thats been around for a while. Definitely worth checking out. There's a few practitioners at this clinic who might have some ideas.

*Twinkle* 11-04-2006, 12:48 Never had any problems with my back, even though I work in care... I use all the correct lifting techniques so I've not done myself a nasty...
I do spend a lot of time on my knees... (to do with work, before anyone says anything rude) but I don't experience any pain in my thighs/calves with that... :?
I do spend a lot of time on my knees... (to do with work)
And what kind of work would that be! :o :hihi:

Behave theesen, you know I work in care :nono:
Is it both knees, or just the left that locks up?

Its the right knee that locks up... The left one is fine...
Ask somebody (pref. female) to have a test of your car.
My sis is on her second polo, and this one has really stiff pedals, which makes driving for any length of time really uncomfortable, but it's the car, not her.
Can't really advise on what's good, but I'm pretty sure that having the seat back and your leg straight would be bad... They're always careful to tell you at the gym never to "lock" any joints to support a weight!
All I can think of is to try and change your position as much as you can - do you normally have your right heel on the floor as you drive, or in the air? You could also try moving either yourself or your foot to either side, in case you're not aligning everything properly. Even a change in the angle of the back of the seat might make a difference!
slide your seat forward i drive with my knees bent, i'm not tall.that way you can press the pedal with leg pressure & not just lower leg/ankle pressure.
it helps my knee trouble.
Ah, just realised, ladies shoes are rubbish for driving in - especially heels, unless you drive a van or a Zafira ;)
*Twinkle* 11-04-2006, 13:36 I dont drive in heels... I have a few pairs of flats in the car which I always drive in...
My knee is hurting now and I'm just chilling out! Strange! :(
