View Full Version : Greatest Sheffied United manager?
I loved harry basset when he was with united, but after watching neil warnock these past few years, its become a james bond situation = roger moore or sean connery.
Who is the blades best manager in ur eyes?
Greatest*
Craig7777 11-04-2006, 05:04 Dave bassett all the way he could buy 10 new players with a fiver:)
Agent Gypo 11-04-2006, 11:59 I'll stick with Warnock, I was too young to remember the Bassett era that much.

I think most of Wednesdays managers over the last ten years are ideal candidates for that; Danny Wilson, Terry Yorath, Chris Turner, dear oh dear.....
Little_Alex 11-04-2006, 12:50 I think most of Wednesdays managers over the last ten years are ideal candidates for that; Danny Wilson, Terry Yorath, Chris Turner, dear oh dear.....I've got to agree! ValleyBoy 11-04-2006, 13:59 Best manager the late John Harris
Wouldnt the best manager be someone who won anything.....so that would be ....erm ....errrr.............errrrr
Little_Alex 11-04-2006, 14:11 Ian Porterfield
Little_Alex 11-04-2006, 14:12 Memory loss? Rose tinted glasses? What are you on about? See what I mean :)
No the best Manager would have to be Harry Bassett
Agent Gypo 11-04-2006, 15:14 See what I mean :)
No. What do you mean?
I am fully aware of our league positions and cup runs over the years, so I don't know what you're getting at when you mention 'rose tinted glasses'.
benclements2 11-04-2006, 16:05 Adrian Heath
Tha what??
Agent Gypo 11-04-2006, 16:09 Tha what??
Isn't he assistant manager somewhere now?
benclements2 11-04-2006, 16:13 Isn't he assistant manager somewhere now?
I dont know. From my recolection he didn't deserve to be assistant manager on champ manager nevermind for real!:hihi:
Agent Gypo 11-04-2006, 16:16 I could be wrong but I think he was at either Southampton or Sunderland fairly recently.
benclements2 11-04-2006, 16:33 That figures. Both teams at the wrong end of their respective leagues!
sufc_tom 11-04-2006, 18:29 Whilst Nigel Spackman was at the lane we played some of the best football I haver ever consistently seen. However he did inherit a good squad from Kendall and we had already agreed to sign Borbokis and Dellas before him. Although, he did sign Marcello and Paul McGrath :D
surfinjim 11-04-2006, 18:35 Who was the manager when the blades went down to the old 4th division?
Was it Harry Haslam????
Anyway, he'd get my vote.

No it wasnt martin peters who took you to the fourth, he only took over for the last few games....Hardly counts that.

I thought Peters was player manager for most of that season...think they were top of the league in October before their late run for relegation.
Surprised nobody's mentioned Ken Furphy - manager when they finished 6th in the First Division 1974/75 - their highest finish in the top flight post war if my memory is correct.

Riiiiiiight. Because Wednesday have had top managers abound for the last 15 years haven't they?
Riiiiiiight. Because Wednesday have had top managers abound for the last 15 years haven't they?
Whats wednesday managers got to do with blunt managers....the trouble is you oinkers have such a inferior complex when it comes to Wednesday.
barnie41 22-04-2006, 18:46 Inferiority complex about what, exactly?
Championship football team, masses of debt, crowd at chairmans throat, selling/ not selling/ selling/ not selling training ground, ground in poor state of repair, masses of debt, manager with little charisma, how many points less than the blades this year?, masses of debt.
Surely, you cannot be talking about bigger crowds?
Waffer, lets be right, now is not the time for blades to have any complex about Wednesday, is it. In years gone by, may be, but look at the set up at Utd, and look at yours. The Wendys had their chance to dominate for years, and now its our turn.
Don't worry, the way things turn out, in 20 years or so, Wendy might be back on top?
Keep smiling, ain't football great?
25 years of complex dosnt go in 10 min........its deep seated in your whole body......in in the deepest parts of your mind. the great WEDNESDAY burns in your very soul.
barnie41 22-04-2006, 19:06 The future's bright, the futures red and white.
Waffer, don't fight it, leave the dark side and join the empire. There is power within you that you can't recognise as yet, you can be a force for good, and unite the great city that is rent in two.
I can read into your posts that you are just waiting to be invited to the top table.
Do it man - for your family, your city and your own good.
Agent Gypo 23-04-2006, 14:58 Whats wednesday managers got to do with blunt managers....the trouble is you oinkers have such a inferior complex when it comes to Wednesday.
Of course we do. That's why we support United and not Wednesday.

Oh no ! I've been sat glued watching BBC world news and I missed this completely.
Bladesman 24-04-2006, 21:35 Id say bassett has been our best
Those Damn Owls are everywhere.........Top supported Club in the Championship.......12th in the Whole country......
Cant argue with that then you should be promoted purely on your support. Seriously give up playing football just aim for a european spot in most supported club.
Although if you club is so well supported why are you getting your players to plug your season tickets.

Ousetunes 27-04-2006, 14:19 Whilst Nigel Spackman was at the lane we played some of the best football I haver ever consistently seen. However he did inherit a good squad from Kendall and we had already agreed to sign Borbokis and Dellas before him. Although, he did sign Marcello and Paul McGrath :D
I totally agree.
The football played under Spackman was on a different level to anything seen before or since. I remember the opening day of the season when we beat Sunderland and I watched with my jaw wide open: I couldn't believe what I was seeing. We had Borbokis (who should have had a real future ahead of him), Fjortoft and Deane up front and McGrath having a laugh in defence, making it look so easy.
Then, the board decided to pull the carpet from beneath our feet, sold our strikeforce and what I am sure would have been automatic promotion faltered into a disappointing season. If Warnock was to call it a day, I'd love Spackman to have another crack at the Lane.
Having said all that, I had some magical times watching Bassett's side blast their way into the top flight with away fixtures at Blackpool and Wolves being particularly memorable. And he found the two black beauties that were Deane and Agana. Class indeed.
Also, Porterfield laid the foundations upon which the club, a Premier League side is presently standing.
Finally, the worst by a country mile was the clueless Adrian Heath. Ted Heath would have had more luck than this unimaginative and uninspiring fella.
Yes but i did smile when i wrote it and it was light hearted...banter we call it .
not the spiteful rants that we have too often...see :hihi:
I remember the owls crying when they lost matches back in the early 90's.
still hearing those screams after all these years.
I heard a few blunts as well scraming as well Ahhh that day at Wembley... Chris Waddle 25 yard still got the Video....

Nah it was a confused Wednesdayite.
Yes i think he was waiting for sturrock to come out in his skirt again:thumbsup:
best manager = Nigel Spackman
happyhippy 17-06-2006, 00:48 best manager = Nigel Spackman
That was Kendall's side that he inherited. Just as Fracis inherited the Atkinson pork.
In the (nearly 32) years I've been on the planet it's between 3 .......
1, Porterfield, for taking a set of journeymen to the 2nd Division from the 4th despite the fact that he didn't have the most talented squad ever ......
2, Bassett, for realising the dream that few of us thought would happen, getting to the top flight again, with absolutely no funds at his disposal (he put up the money for several downpayments on transfers himself, lest it be forgotten).
3, Warnock, for keeping faith in the youth team, and the board (unlike the thousands of us who never would, and let's be fair, no football fan is *entirely* happy with the board), and getting us up again *, and might I say, from the same position as Bassett did, but in a much different world, which is a lot harder.
In 3rd place, the forgotten man, Porterfield. But never forget he took a dreadful rag tag and bob tail side up 2 divisions.
Taking the silver gong is Our Beloved Neil. Just because it took so long for him to do what the mega gong winner did .......
But the Blade D'Or is Bassett. Even though there's barely a fag paper between him and Warnock, the manner in which he did it still stands out. And if the board hadn't sold Deano from underneath him .....
EDIT: *forgot a bit. This time round it has been 12 years we had to wait to return to the top flight. Our las wait was 15 years. Just this time, we had no ups or downs ......
o poor wednesday fans it makes me laugh how things have changed, how it used to be "were the premiership club the big club" now a small not evan average second tier team, "our grounds bigger and better than yours ever will be" now a tin pot with seats in with decaying wood and rusty looking metal, where on the other we may not be a massive club but where surely premiership and our ground may not be massive but is 21 century and were expanding. enjoy ur trips to southend and barnsley next season.
anyways back on to topic i beleive Neil Warnock followed closely by Basset i think some of the best times have come under warnock yes he has had is daft decisions leaving windass n mcall out in play off final but look were hes brought us we were bottom 18 in second tier.
adrian heath is my all time worst manager id rahter seen my nan in charge

That doesn't matter though spadge because Red and White makes pink and they have bigger crowds...Let them clutch at those two straws cos they will have to for a good few years ;)
kingfisher 30-06-2006, 13:51 The best was Teddy Davidson(ex wednesday goalie)He got them to Wembley in 1936 and promotion to Division 1 in 1938 and brought jimmy Hagan to the lane
PhilMurray 01-07-2006, 08:30 it was martin peters one of my old mates from school played for united that season trenton wiggan
what ever happened to trenton wiggan?........i had one off those 70,s photo badges of him.
trophyman 01-07-2006, 08:39 being an owl with an opinion i have to say i think the best manager you lot had was harry bassett. took you lot from the doldrums up to the top tier (fair enough he took you down as well). also bought bobby davison who put the fear of god into us at hillsborough in 1992. harry did extremely well on the budget he was working on.
worst manager i can think of is billy mcewen or adrian heath but i dont think you blades want to go there :hihi:
trophyman 01-07-2006, 08:49 Whats wednesday managers got to do with blunt managers....the trouble is you oinkers have such a inferior complex when it comes to Wednesday.
