Apparently tne number 6 was Judaic for bad.so 666 is very bad which is why people associate it with the Devil. The number 7 is very good,so 777 is God.That's what i got told at college anyway, the lecturer may have been lying!

he was lying. it's from the book of Revelations. many scholars have aligned the 'beast' with the Roman emperor Nero. not that i'm an expert or anything, i simply read a lot of weird books.

I once had 666 in my bank so I took more money out. I think it was 66 pounds and 6 pence or something odd. Those numbers just creep me out, I can't get the fact that it is the number of the beast out of my head, thanks Iron Maiden!:D

Just one small problem, 666 is a misprint. It's 616 according to original texts.

(which just goes to show how silly it all is ;))

Yes it's very unlucky, even by typing it as the thread title you have doomed us all to pestilence and famine.

Tony is right. It should be 616, so the Damian in the Omen was really nothing but the possessor of a freaky birthmark and a nasty streak.

From 9 million years of human history there is absolutely no evidence that having 666 (or 616) tattooed on your behind will make your head spin round.

It may give future medical students a laugh though. :headbang:

Is it because it is traditionally thought to be under the hairline?
*Trying to get the picture of SuzukiRiders hairy arse out of my head*

If it is 616, does that mean that 24.819 is the root of all evil?

It definitely was not, originally, 666. I've heard it was 600, as well as claims that it was 616.

The most likely explanation for the change is that 666 is the total you get by adding up the numerals in the Pope's title "VICARIVS FILII DEI." A useful argument for fundamentalist Protestants, in the time of religious wars.

It's also been claimed that the numerologist freaks of the early Christian centuries changed the number when they found that an early Pope had a name whose numerical equivalent was exactly 600. (Or 616, or whatever the hell the number actually was...)

In short, the whole thing's a complete pile of tripe.

I was purchasing a few items at a drug store and my total rang up as $6.66. The cashier gasped in horror and asked if I wanted to buy something else to change the number!

I once applied to the DVLA to buy a personal number plate that included 666 in it (and those who have been about on the forum long enough will remember that my original username was medusa666) but apparently they don't allow them to be registered- it's on the banned list just like all of the number plates that spell out rude words etc.

Makes me wonder why they allow anything with a number 13 in to be registered then.

666 is unlucky for Slimsid as it's the number of female forummers who've turned him down.

I dont know wether its been changed now but I have a personal number plate that includes 666 although when my kind other half rang up to buy it for me ( a surprise birthday present) he did have a lot of trouble from the woman on the other end saying are you sure you want this number plate as is it associated with the devil!

It surprises me how many people come up and tell me what a cool number plate I have!

I did read (some years ago, of course .. probably about '89) that plates with the number 666 were no longer being registered. The ones that were already in existence before that, never got recalled; so if you can find someone willing to sell it to you, no problem.

Since modern number plates only carry two numbers the question, obviously, no longer arises.

Here are some other facts you thought you knew but really didn't.

London's famous statue of Eros at Piccadilly Circus isn't Eros. It's actually his older brother Anteros.

France claims to have invented champagne. Well, they didn't-they nicked it off us Brits who first developed it in the 16th century.

Jaffa The tasty orangey bits in Jaffa Cakes? Afraid that's made from apricot!

There are NOT 24 hours in a day. It can be up to 50 seconds longer or shorter because the speed the Earth rotates at changes slightly all the time.

The Number of the Beast isn't 666-it's 616.

Depression, not the common cold, is Britain's most common illness.

True in the books; false in the films. And hardly anybody ever reads the books nowadays.

And James Bond's favourite tipple is whisky, not Martini.

Julius Caeser went into a pub & ordered a Martinum.

The barman said - "don't you mean a Martini"

Julius glared at him & said "If I'd wanted a double I'd have asked for one"

Here are some other facts you thought you knew but really didn't.........
On a similar note the oft trotted out thing about Victorians and table legs being covered is as a result of some satirical letter by an American living in UK in those days, which then went on to become a 'fact'.
I also believe Victor Lewis Smith was responsible for the rude names in Captain Pugwash. Which even people who saw the programme believed.

i remember seeing somewhere that in ancient text the number 6 equatated to the letter w.

So that means the name of the beast would be www, dont know where i've seen that before :hihi:

Next time you see a lone magpie, if you experience sorrow soon afterwards, or joy after seeing two, then 666 is probably really bad.

i was thinking along the same lines, its only unlucky if you dial 666 and your phone is upside down:)
