maybe it's something you aspire to when you get over say 25 - i know that i'm more health conscious now compared to when i was younger - or maybe peoples 'good' health tends to be more of an issue these days, you only have to look at all the mags now dedicated to keeping fit and staying in shape

No. At least not often. I do take Herbalife though which gives me the nutrients and vitamins I miss - so that helps.

Were you not around when we had all the debates about Herbalife? I suggest you do a search which will throw up loads of links pointing out the damage to your health and pocket that Herbalife products can do.

Unless you're being ironic in which case I apologise.

I try,
I get more through fruit juice than through fruit and generally have 1 or 2 portions of veg with my main meal.

I eat lots of veg, and green salad. Does that count? Is it 5 fruit and 5 veg or just either or that they recommend?
I don't eat fruit apart from berries on occasion because fruit has far to much sugar in it. I used to, but don't anymore.

it's either that they reccomend but i think they also say that it's better if you get a bit of each as this contributes to a more balanced diet

fruit has too much sugar does it?? didn't know that. That can't be very good then

Any combinations of fuit and veg count. Potatoes don't count and no matter how much fruit juice you drink that still only counts as one portion.

I normally get 5 a day, but only because my Mum and Grandma endlessly buy fruit. Its quite an expensive item really, considering the "5 a day" rule.

I dont get my 5 fruit and veg a day, although I did have a apple and 2 bananas today.

Yep love fruit and veg. We get bags delivered from Beanies (http://www.google.co.uk/local?hl=en&lr=&cr=countryUK|countryGB&q=beanies&near=Sheffield&sa=X&oi=locald&radius=0.0&latlng=53383040,-1464807,15707936335159116246) with fruit and veg in them every week.

Generally manage to incorporate 3/4 servings in an evening meal - noodles, rice, cous cous, pasta, curry or soup. Yum :)

start the day with an apple and 2 bananas usually... about half the week thats it, but i get veg in the evening sometimes with my tin of beans (oh and it gives me the fibre ;) lol ) or my veg with my stir frys... and of course my sunday dinner if i'm back at home in sheffield :D

i need to think of more easy meals with veg... but when you your working full time and your a lazy student you just can't be arsed most of the time... and cooking for one is really boring :( any young females want to volunteer as ginua pigs for my cooking so i can cook more interesting meals? lol

Monday is one of my alcohol free days so I like to eat healthily as well.
3 pieces of fruit for lunch

stir-fry for tea with about 8 portions of veg.

Yes fruit does have sugar in it and it isn't bad, unless you have some health problem that involves your sugar intake. The sugar in fruit is au contraire very good for you. Eating fruit first thing in the morning helps your digestive system continue the good work it has been doing over night and kick starts your guts in a very good way. Great for all those of you who hardly ever get your 5 portions. Try at least to eat some raw fruit before anything else. And fruit is not that expensive. You don't have to buy exotic fruit or out of season berries. Just apples, oranges, pears (lots around at present).

I am interested in the relation of diet to poor health especially mental health and wonder how many of you actually have 5 portions of fruit and veg a day?

Do you think we often say we have a good diet when actually comparing our diets to some people it is not that good at all.

I know that everything is relative and there are some extremely healthy people, some very unhealthy ones and then there are many somewhere in between, but I believe that eating a balanced diet is the key to good health for both the mind and the body. Do you agree?

I oven roast two trays of mixed vegies on Mondays, I have them for a noon meal, they last all week, then I start all over again the next Monday :)

I have never been a great eater of fruit and possibly go a few weeks without eating any. As far as veg is concerned I usually have several portions daily, mainly fresh but sometimes frozen. I dont think we have poor diets now as a poor diet would normally lead to vitamin deficiencies and that's a pretty rare occurrence.

Now that the "5 a day" idea has been discredited it makes me feel a bit better mentally so perhaps it would be better for our health not to have the pressure of trying to conform to these unproven ideas in the first place.

To answer the last part, no.

I have 2 pieces of fruit with lunch every day, salad in my sandwich normally and salad or cooked veg with dinner. I hit 5 a day most days, sometimes go over, occasionally under by 1 portion.

Where did the 5 a day come from, another random government pronouncement like alcohol units?

Do the fermented juices of apples and grapes count?

vwkittie
16-07-2010, 15:19
Most days yes I would think so. However my philosophy is that people have survived pretty well up until recently without neurotically counting how many 'portions' (whatever that actually means) of fruit and veg they have a day, so really I shouldn't bother. I just eat decent home cooked grub, avoid processed rubbish, don't worry about it, and that suits me :)

It also suits me, until I mix with other parents who seem to take delight in eating the healthiest of foods and actually enjoying them.
I do think it important to make the right choices when it comes to food. I know what they are but must admit that my one weakness is green and blacks organic chocolate!:hihi:

Espadrill.

There really is no such thing as "healthier" food as all food has it merits. Over consumption of some foods can lead to problems but that does not mean that the food consumed is unhealthy.

I easily do five a day. There must be 10 a day in the grapes that make up the wine that I consume every day.
