or advice on what to do. Been to the Epson site this morning looking for a driver for an Epson Stylus color 600 for XP but they only have up to 98/ME. I assume this means the printer is not compatible? Does anyone know if its possible to fool the pc into using the 98 or ME drivers? or any more ideas?

I used to have one of them, never had to use any drivers with Windows XP if I remember right. Just stick it in a USB port, or if it's parallel go to...

Start -> Printers & Faxes -> Add a Printer

& follow the instructions.

get XP to search the XP installation disk for a driver when you're installing it. chances are there will be one there.

thanks for your replies. LL200 - doesn't look like the Stylus color 600 is supported. I'll download the win 2k drivers and see if that will work or try the old helpdesk favourite "have you rebooted it?" :)

if i go to install a new printer, one of the printers i can install without xp disks or extra drivers is "Epson Stylus COLOUR 600 ESC/P 2". obviously i cant test if it actually works, but it certainly installs correctly.

now to see if it uninstalls correctly :)

Just to back up LL200 on this... Looking at that document it does appear that your printer IS supported automatically by WinXP (ie: the driver is included automatically).

Why?! Have you not read the other posts explaining that the driver is already included as standard as part of WinXP... You DO NOT NEED to download another driver.

Your post is generic and just confuses things.

Martin I appreciate your comments but you should remember this is an open forum and Balthasar is entitled to comment. I am still investingating all possibilities but so far have not managed to install the printer.

Ok, fair enough but it does help if you read the advice given previously in a thread.

The driver link is a useful one, and doubtless going to be relevant to some other issue, just not this particular one. So, apologies if I sounded overly harsh... Just trying to keep someone from wasting time following a dead end.

This from the Epson site.....

There is no driver available to download for your configuration. This is may be due to the fact that the driver is already included with your operating system.

And I concure with everyone else, it is.

Hi Commuter

now this might sound weird, but if you are still having problems installing, have you tried disabaling any active, i.e. always on, anti virus sortware?

I've had a few problems recently with installing hardware and found it to be this being a bit over protective, which I suppose is a good thing. I just need to remember to turn it off and then on again instead of hitting my machine :D

Not saying it's your solution but worth a try :)

Thanks to all I hope to find time to try various things this weekend. The pc and printer belong to my father and I don't live in the same house so I need to make time to go and try all of your suggestions. I'll let you know what happens.

I have finally managed to sort this problem. It took some time last night and involved a very technical solution .......... connecting the cable from the printer to the pc

There was indeed a cable connected to the pc and one to the printer unfortunately the two ends were not the same cable:hihi:

That's what happens when you put a retired electrician and a software tester together in the same room. I know it's even worse that I work with pc's all day but I just turn on and use it.

Thanks for all your suggestions, this has taught me one thing .... never make your questions public until you've checked all possibilities.

Sounds like something I'd do:blush:

Thanks for giving me a giggle on a pretty drab Saturday morning:hihi:

brilliant! makes it even more funny that it was an electrician and a software tester...

Ah, but none of them were actually PC technicians so no wonder they couldn't work out it wasn't plugged in!

You'll notice that one of them has obviously checked the power was on, and the other made sure the software was installed. All they were missing was someone to plug the data cable in. ;)

If it makes you feel any better my father (a programmer and hardware technician) and myself (aged 14 at the time) spent 2 hours trying to work out why a monitor was failing to display any kind of picture.

In the end my sister put us out of our misery by picking up the plug we thought was attached to the TV and plugging it in to the socket.. Voila, one working monitor and 2 family members who had to hear how dumb we were for years..

Glad to have brightened all your days. This was my second major success of the weekend, I successfully got TomTom working on my father's pocket pc too. In fact I've started a new role today, we are expecting a baby, I've got new glasses, got some diy done this weekend as well....... oh and it's a bank holiday next Monday hurrah!!!
