It's 2pm on a quiet afternoon . . .

. . .Two youths in their late teens knock on your door. When you answer the door they look a little agitated and decidedly dodgy.

They ask you if 'Mr Smith' lives there. When you say no, they seem quick to leave.

They could be burglars searching for an empty house.

What would you do ?

Would you dial 999 ?

Would probs not phone 999 but might contact local police station to advise them that there may be a couple of susp youths in the neighbourhood.

Why ?

Not 999. Perhaps inform your neighbours though?
I had something similar this year - some guy opened the door to my room, looked suprised to see someone here and asked if 'Nathan' lived here. There was then a very quick exit...
(Someone else had left the door into our flats unlocked)

Both our doors are locked when we are in and
locked when we are out.

Sad - but that's the way it is.

Better safe than sorry.

You do get things like that and you can spend a long time debating what to do about it. Not long back someone gave a website on here for such things:-

I agree with Yorkie, keep all your doors locked even when your in the house these mongrels will do anything to get some cash for their next fix even if they come across elderly people it doesnt matter to them, and if you see them getting into a vehicle take its number and pass it on to the local nick,if they know where it's from they just might be able to catch them later if not at the scene.I am not sure if they still do it but didn't the local crimestoppers fit free chains for the elderly ?

Get intouch with your local neighbourhood watch initiative. They have the means to contact the police via the liason constable and will be able to contact other local coordinators to pass on the message to look out for certain individuals/ cars etc.

Not 999 but definitely a case of giving the local station a quick buzz to advise them that a couple of likely lads are doing the rounds...

If nothing else.. if they get a report of a break in taking place around the same area and time then your ability to ID the lads in question would give them a lead..

Not 999, probably not ring at all, keep an eye on them out of the window. They could be looking for a friend or may be wanting to track him down for something else. Nervousness doesn't always mean that they're about to do wrong, it could mean that they feel shy and embarrassed knocking on a stranger's door.

Still keep an eye on them and if they do start doing something suspicious then ring Sheffield Control.

Tell them you are Mr. Smith and ask them what they want of you?

That should put them on the spot.

We get 'em round here pretty regular, usually they get told if they come anywhere near our house again they'll be severely beaten - it's worked so far. Obviously depending on who you are that might not be an option, it's not an emergency either though so best calling a cop shop and telling your neighbours.
