View Full Version : Warning : Postal Scam
littleboo 07-04-2006, 21:24 Apologies if this has already been posted (did a quick search but nothing came up)
If you receive a card through your door from a company call PDS (Parcel
Delivery Service) saying that they have a parcel awaiting delivery instructions and can you contact them on 0906 6611911
DO NOT call the number as this is a mail scam originating from Belize
If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £15 for the phone call.
If you do receive a card with these details, then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 02072396655 or ICTIS at <http://www.icstis.org.uk> or your local trading standards office. This is a genuine scam.
ICTIS have the following information about this number. This is a card posted through your letter box from PDS Parcel Delivery suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and to call the premium rate number in question. This service costs £1.50 per minute. This service is under investigation by ICSTIS.
Please be aware of this scam and forward this information to as many as possible.
Should you receive a card from this company please follow the above instructions

upinwath 10-04-2006, 11:17 Just extend the warning to all things that use a premium rate number.
There are international phone cards being given away promising lots of free minutes. Problem is you have to dial an 09 number to get them.
I wonder how many poor sods have been tricked by them.
The rule is easy
NEVER dial an 09 number. They are all scams.
Unless anyone knows I'm wrong :D
candystick 10-04-2006, 11:21 This has already been done Here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=102237&highlight=parcel)
NEKRO138 10-04-2006, 12:01 What areas in Sheffield are these cards being dealt out in?
the_rudeboy 10-04-2006, 12:03 What areas in Sheffield are these cards being dealt out in? Sorry, no idea.
This has been doing the rounds for a couple of years now. If it isn't a hoax, which I strongly suspect it might be, it is national or international.
I have a feeling that the email from which this comes originated abroad ~ has anyone ever heard of PDS?
Whatever, if you're not expecting a parcel, just ignore the card. If you are expecting the parcel, ring the company from which it was sent, and ask which delivery service they are using. In most cases, when you order an item, the company concerned will state which delivery service they use.
with regards to the amount that you are charged
0906 premium rate numbers..."
Premium rate numbers are numbers that begin with 0906. They can be used to raise revenue from callers telephoning your 0906 number. You can set the amount to charge the caller from £0.15p per minute to £1.50p per minute
The maximum that any uk premium rate number can charge is £1.50/min.
the_rudeboy 10-04-2006, 12:17 If it isn't a hoax, which I strongly suspect it might beBetter to be safe than sorry though?
I'd go with it being a hoax. There are no telephone numbers you can dial in the UK which will instantly charge you £15. I've seen several of these type of things, where the actual point is to make people scared of calling people on the phone in case they get charged some ridiculous amount of money.
If one person on here knows anyone who has actually been caught out by this scam, then I'll start believing it, but until then I'm going to ignore it.
It wasn't a hoax, but it has been dead and burried for a couple of years now.
Why TF don't people google when they get these flaming emails? The amount of this kind of junk cluttering up the servers of this planet because these things won't die, but just get passed round and round and round and....
I thought this might have been a hoax too, but a quick search of snopes (http://www.snopes.com/fraud/telephone/pds.asp) reveals it's true.
Yes, and Snopes also tells us that it was shut down in December 2005, so we can all stop panicking and cluttering up each other's inboxes and servers now
the_rudeboy 10-04-2006, 14:40 It wasn't a hoax, but it has been dead and burried for a couple of years now. Sidlas post would seem to indicated that this isn't the case.
Sidla's post seems to indicate It died in December 2005. Go buy yourself a Sun if you want something topical to panic about

From said article: Although the specific warning e-mail reproduced at the head of this page is out of date, it represents a common form of telephone fraud that has been used in the past and will likely be used again, so the public is well advised to be aware of it.
Which is the reason behind this thread......to make people aware.
The Sun comment had me in stitches BTW. :|
