Cycleracer   10 #1 Posted May 15, 2003 Well my view of the games is if like the World studant games is anything to go by then London Council Tax payers will be paying for this for years to come. I hope this turns out possitive for this country and makes a profit like it did in Aussie but Britain has a reputation for White elephants. Mind you i think London is not the place for this and would be more beneficial in the Midlands or the North West of England. Do you want the games to come here ?. Is East London a wise choice ?. RPG Â Â 10 #2 Posted May 15, 2003 it'd be much better either in manchester (where its proven they can hold an olympic style events, very well) or in brum
 Share this content via...
Lickszz   10 #3 Posted May 15, 2003 I fully support any games bid. The proposed fees would work out about £500 per person for 35 years, I don't think this is a small price to pay. For the employment and business if will bring to this part of London. The game would most likely make a profilt overall.
 Share this content via...
max   13 #4 Posted May 16, 2003 I'm in favour of the Olympics bid. It's just a shame that they won't be considering using Northern venues. It's probably because Americans only know about London and wouldn't be able to find anywhere else.  The main reason that the Student Games failed is because it didn't get the media coverage that it was due. We had world class athletes here, most of whom appeared the following year in the Olympics, and people could see them for a fraction of the cost of the Olympics. Unfortunately, the national press are in thrall to the conservatives and so they weren't interested in anything happening in the socialist republic.  The Manchester games last year were well run and well publicised but IMHO there were too few events. It was reduced to 18 disciplines all of which were TV friendly. My sport is fencing and it wasn't even included as part of the pentathlon. mikey   10 #5 Posted May 16, 2003 I would hope that if we do win this bid, events would be put on throughout the country and maybe even in Sheffield and Manchester.  There is no point building new stadia in London when we have a world class cycling velodrome in Manchester, and a fantastic arena in Sheffield for maybe something like fencing or gymnastics.  Lets hope we do win the bid and the Gov shares it around
 Share this content via...
alchresearch   214 #6 Posted May 26, 2003 I do not see why the olympics cannot be held across Northern England. Manchester and Sheffield both have excellent facillities, thanks to both the Commonwealth and World Student Games.  Both cities have far superior transport links than London and boast the added advantage that our facillities are actually built!
