Hi, can anyone suggest me some suitable sites for a newcomer to the internet - just general stuff like google and bbc - they are totally newbies and I want to set them some favs for their new connection so anything you can suggest.

I'd give them some of my links but they're probably not the sort of thing they are looking for.

cheers

Some Newspaper websites (wouldn't like to prescribe - depends what they read...)
Wikipedia
Shef Forum
Version Tracker (or some other Shareware site)

find out what else interests them (genealogy is always popular, literary resources, other reference sites etc.)

SF has to be a must....there's so much an internet novice could learn on here, and it's fun too.

wow, awesome question.

reminds me when I first got intraweb. I had to look in magazines for uri's.

funny to hear this sort of question now.
serious though, google (any search engine) has everything you need, depends what you are into.
funny videos/news/pr0n/etc..
google it.

even when I know a site has what i want, i still search through google, even if the site has a search function. e.g. imdb, homepage = google. I google imdb <film>. its faster :)

maybe ask for sites related to what your into and people will reply with more interesting links.

anyhoow, welcome to the web :P

some links I like

http://www.theregister.co.uk - news
irongeek.com - interesting videos
binrev.com - another forum
ebaumsworld.com - funny - pics/vids/lnks to other funny sites/(popups nowadays)
houseofhelp.com - another forum
purepwnage.com - funny gaming vids
bash.org - funny internet quotes
mirc.com - good irc client

like i said, all depends on what you are into
