Lets wait and see if the Arctic Monkeys are still around in 20+ years. They will then have earned the right to be polled against Pulp.

the monkeys are generating more interest now than pulp did when they first came out.... come on the monkeys!!!!

Yeah but the interest in the Spice Girls wasn't for their music, cos it's a known fact that the Posh one can't sing, and neither can Sporty.

It was more for the T&A attraction... Or C&A if you count Sporty's fashion sense, or rather lack thereof.

Yep agree with you there. To be honest I have only heard one Arctic monkeys song, I didn't care much for it and if the album is much of the same it will fade away I think when NME gets bored and something new is out for them to shove on everyone :P

Are Pulp still around? To be quite honest for 90% of people Pulp were 1995's "Different Class" album and the singles from it.

Me, I like 'em both and would call it a score draw.

I voted Arctic Monkeys but I think I love them both just as much. Pulp are/were ace... I see alot of similarlities in the two bands, mainly in their attitude, lyrics and humour. They both make me proud to live in Sheffield!

Never really liked Pulp, so it has to be the Arctic Monkeys for me.

Yeah but Fran Ferdinand were a "one hit wonder", remember that "Matinee" song they had?! I'm sorry but, WTF?! "Matinee matinee, I'm gonna take myself to a Matinee" does not make a good song IMO, even if kids these days are too stupid to make up their own minds and buy any old overhyped teeny bopper tripe the mass media tells them to :loopy:

... I rather like Matinee though - just like I like the AM's, but it begs the same question.

I'm a bit worried about this new indie stuff. You read in NME about how it's 'rock n roll'. It's not. It's indie. Also, the NME awards was sponsored by Wella Shockwaves. AAAAAARRRRRGGHHH!!

What a disgrace! Having what is supposed to be a rock n roll event sponsored by a hair product company.

Yeah but the intrest they have generated will die down. Even Noel Gallagher said "Common People is the song that defined the 90's. I know that its 2006 now but bands like Pulp do not fade away. They have recieved to much hype too soon, after a while thats when people will get board......

yeh but look at the albums i remember buying one of the early pulp albums and there were plenty of really poor "filler" tracks where as the Arctics whatever album i think any of those tracks could be a decent single.

Tony

I give you "Riot Van" as evidence for the prosecution.

What a load of junk that track is.

Pulp's fisrt charted album was His n Hers and it was a number 1 selling album and it was the same for the rest of the studio albums apart from we love life. Dont get me wrong though the Artic Monkeys are really good but pulp are a DIFFERENT CLASS.....xx......

Sorry, but Pulp. Especially cos I saw him wandering round Paris with his son and a baguette and a bottle of wine all in the same pram. Classic

About two month ago, I was out in town and Jarvis was in the pub. I went over and had a chat with him. He said he'd come back for a bit cos he missed Sheffield. I congratulated him for attacking jacko.

So was Elvis and Lennon but they are still compared. And as if they are totally different do you listen to the lyrics of songs

I've been listening to Milburn (and We Are Scientists) this afternoon and I'm coming rapidly to the conclusion that the Sheffield Sound is going to get outed quite quickly.

There's nowt wrong with it, but da kids aren't going to be able to tell one band from the other unless they get up on Ant n Dec or Dick n Dom to compare hairstyles. There's not enough to hold my loyalty in this sound. The sound isn't new, it isn't exciting, and it all feels a bit 6th Form.

TBH I'm starting to get a bit fed up of 'yet another grass roots indie does good' band with a switched on record company massaging the cash from my wallet.

Which brings us right back to Domino and their Arctic Monkey's promotion techniques!

I've also listened to Elbow, Editors, Kaiser Chiefs, Bright Eyes and Arcade Fire today, and it all feels... well, so much more grown up. I've got Guillimots on back order at the moment, and I suspect that's going to be my flavour of the month for a little while when it arrives.

Sorry, even though I quite like them I just can't seem to get sucked into the Arctics hype.

Arctics Are now and will in the future be much bigger than Pulp imo.As I said earlier we can only wait and see. At the moment AM cant be considered the best Sheffield band on the back of only two singles and one album.

I do agree 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' is a great album but Pulp have been churning out great records since 1983.

AM need to win the title off Pulp with consistancy and longevity. Lets be honest this time last year nobody had heard of 'em.

A bit of an aside to this thread;

I usually listen to music in my kitchen, but tonight I thought I'd play the Monkeys CD whilst on my computer - track listings had the band as the "Artic Monkeys"!

I thing they're a tad too young to be driving big lorries...........

the poll is a little narrow, of the two bands listed, I would pick Pulp every time, although I do like what the arctic monkeys are doing. AM are young lads, and have time to develop a sound, and an identity all their own, and who knows they may in the long run overshadow pulp, it all remains to be seen.

lest we forget though.......

the human league
heaven 17
abc
comsat angels
clock dva
cabaret voltaire
duff leotard ( sorry but it's poodle rock)
paul heaton
richard hawley
simon hinkler

not to mention all the other fantastic bands who are keeping Sheffield the country's finest (partially) hidden treasure.

the city is alive with great music, come out of an evening and enjoy it.

As a big fan of both the Arctic Monkeys and Pulp, I think you're spot-on in what you say.

Heaven 17 are probably one of the most underrated band to come out of Sheffield. They sold enough in their day, but their impact was far more reaching. Penthouse & Pavement still feels fresh today, even if the world and its politics have moved on :)

I once found an old Comsat Angels stage backcloth in a building on West Street. I regret not nabbing it - it would look great on my dining room wall today.

even though I'm knocking on a bit now, I'm still proud and excited to be a part of a great music scene here in sheffield.

music can take you anywhere, emotionally and sometimes physically, it's the greatest art form we have in my humble estimation.

Just to be awkward I'd say that Def Leppard are the best band to come out of Sheffield!

But out of Artic Monkeys and Pulp, I voted Pulp...
