View Full Version : Spam...
Nutronic 02-11-2003, 21:58 This morning I logged into my emails to find that some idiot has plastered my email address to companies worldwide.
My email address was subscribed to 179 companies  what program works with OE 5.5 and knows if something is spam straight away or knows that when you block an address i.e @hotmail.com then all mail from that particular company is auto matically blocked?
You could try MailWasher and selectively bounce back the emails you don't want. Hopefully they will think your address is no longer valid and remove it.
Phanerothyme 03-11-2003, 00:15 spampal (www.spampal.org) is the best free spam solution I have yet encountered.

Yes use mailwasher (free for personal use on one address) - you don't even need to download the junk to your PC - a big advantage if you're on dial-up. However probably better NOT to use the bounce option because...
Many of the spammers use false sender's addresses - not made up addresses but addresses of people who have replied to "take me of your junk mail list" messages. So your Bounce arrives in an innocent third parties mailbox - as yet another piece of junk.
Those that DO get your "bounce" responses don't look at the message but sign your address up as one which is actively used
I have tried bouncing messages to places you might expect to act on them - like The Times and Barclaycard - they disregard them and keep sending the junk.
Phanerothyme 03-11-2003, 16:16 Yes, never, ever bounce. Means that there is an active server picking up on that address, so other address combinations might be worth a try.
Spampal also has bayesian plugin which learns and performs probabilistic analysis on messages that are not cuaght by dirty word lists, or spammer domain blacklists.
Spampal also has autowhitelisting feature for regular correspondents.
Spampal gets my vote over and over. (if they'd let you, stupid democratic process)
Nutronic 03-11-2003, 18:39 I'll give spam pal a try as mailwasher would be no good for me.
Cheers for the help:thumbsup:
Just curious really,I only used to get maybe one or two items of spam in my mailbox. so far this week I have 458 Spam mails in my deleted item folder. Just wonderd what amout everyone else gets . And they are all titled somthing like "honeyplanet enlarge your penis naturally" would'nt mind if I had one. And I seem to be getting an incresing amount of spoof mail asking for secure details
is it just me or does everybody get them?
they're a fact of life these days. i get loads of them. i seem to get more everytime i purchase something from Amazon for some strange reason.
A.B.Yaffle 24-04-2004, 11:00 i get about 40 per day in my junk folder... mostly of the "increase your size" type. My fiancee won't let me apply for the offers though lol.
The annoying thing about the spam is that it can fill up my account if i don't delete them every few days.
mr craig 24-04-2004, 11:08 I don't get any........... :(
MODS - thread very similar to several others (e.g. http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4232&highlight=spam ) and plenty more that have spam as the main topic. Potential to be merged.
Moon Maiden 24-04-2004, 11:30 Thanks T020 - but I know you know how to use the report button!!!
I have come across a program called Spam CSI - not only does it help you to sort out your spam but it will help you sort out a letter to report said spammers to their ISP. Haven't fully tried it out yet but am working on it.

speaking of spam, I got a message from hotmail stating that i'd blocked the maximum permissable amount of domains (250), and can now only block specific email addresses. Does anyone know whether there's a limit in hotmail on the amount of addresses you can block?
I've just got up so haven't looked through hotmail for the answer yet
A.B.Yaffle 25-04-2004, 10:09 There does seem to be a limit... I reached the limit ages ago which means I haven't been able to block any email addresses for over a year now :-(
I've been using Spamnet for nearly a year and it's very good.
On Hotmail, maybe you could try collecting it using Outlook (you can do this now) and use Spamnet or similar to filter it there? Not tried this idea yet, but I might give it a go.
