Went for a stroll down the Sett Valley Trail, which follows the railway line through Hadfield. There is a really interesting old house alongside the track, like a signal keepers house or something, which has old rolling stock as sheds in the garden. It was all derelict, and usually I would go and have a nosey around, but there were a few forestry workers around that would probably have shouted at me. Interesting though. There is a good part along the Monsal trail where it goes over a viaduct above the road and the river. It's really high and quite spectacular. There are two viaducts running side by side, but only one is open to the public. Obviously I wanted to go on the other one... There were some old Lime Kilns nearby too. Not too familiar with the Monsal area, need to check it out a bit more. I love finding the old relics of the railway lines. The signal box at Penistone is quite interesting too, but beware of the used needles if you go check it out... :( Cols 26-04-2004, 18:25 Quite a few years ago me and my brother walked through the Woodhead tunnel. It's quite a distance and very interesting inside but it's got iron bars on it now so you can't get in. The tunnels on the Monsal Trail are often opened up for guided walks but I've never been through them. Col S |
