View Full Version : Memory Lane..for all ages...TV Adverts

This last couple of days, I can't get memories of a couple of old TV advertisements out of my mind. In my case, as a teenager, they go far back, virtually to the start of Commercial Television in the mid-1950's. They have been tormenting me, so I thought "It's about time the other SF Members suffered as well!":hihi:

I am very "kind" like that sometimes.:)

So, regardless of your age, what Adverts stick in your mind from your early TV viewing days?

Mine are...mid 1950's...

Pepsodent Toothpaste.. "You'll wonder where the yellow went when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent!" was the jingle.

The other jingle was "Rael Brook Toplin Top Man's Shirt!"

I remember the Humphry's who used to steal peoples milk and that one about road safety, narrated I think, by Captain Peacock from Are You Being Served where some bloke gets run over on the way to work.

And of course the "Charlie says don't go into the woods to look at strange mens puppies" ones.

I remember the Humphry's who used to steal peoples milk

Watch out there's a Humphrey about!

The ones that stick out from my childhood right now are the RWhites Lemonade - 'I'm a secret lemonade drinker'

and the 'No, we're with the Woolwich' advert, which became a sort of national catchphrase for a while.

I remember the Hovis ads - probably due to the 'Two Ronnies' take-off of it, rather than it being directed by Ridley Scott. Could you imagine an alien leaping out from a granary loaf and devouring the kid with the bike? :)

There was an advert for 'Davenport Beers' which I associate with staying at my Aunt's house. She was in the ATV catchment area, rather than Yorkshire, and so perhaps it was a more Midlands advert, but it had a song with the line 'Beer at home means Davenports', complete with bouncy ball sing-along.... Whilst on beer - Freddie Truman advertising Webster's Pennine Bitter.

Not quite the same but I remember the 'tag lines' of a couple of TV series that were on late at night. As a child I'd fall asleep on the couch and my mum would wake me to go to bed. Something that stuck with me for ages was the line 'There are 8 million stories in the naked city, this has been one of them' - it's from a cop show called 'The Naked City' that must have aired sometime in the early to mid 1960s when I was a pre-schooler.

Milky Bar adverts.....the songs tended to get re-written by adolescent boys though. 'The milky bar kid is strong and tough' usually became 'The milk bar kid is a great big puff'. Children are charming... :)

Oh nightmare, does anyone remember the Mum adverts, roll on or spray anti perspirants and deoderants....'My Mum's better than your Mum, no my Mum's better than yours' ..... tragically I still hold that one with me.
And I don't recall the product but an advert which showed a baby sat on a sofa, then showed the baby growing through life, with own kids, then grandkids etc. I'd love to know the product.

Erm, looking at some of the replies has brought some memories flooding back. I remember the Smash martians pretty well as well as the Um-Bongo ad.

Here are a few that might irritate a few peeps:

Do the shake and vac, put the freshness back (however it went). Hideous ad!

Finger of fudge is just enough to give child a treat. Another annoying ad that has stayed with me.

Oh, not forgetting the public safety ads with Darth Vader " Stop, Look and Listen" and Charlie "Charlie says don't stroke stranger's puppies" or something to that effect lol.

The other one that sticks out is the Vauxhall ads where a bloke is after a woman because he wants the car!

Kiora was a brand of fruit cordial type drinks.I think that the add was about a little girl pushing past a whole row of people at the pictures to buy some sweets ( The add pre-dates popcorn ) and her friend shouts the phrase to her. :D
