View Full Version : Sheffield Music Scene - Who are the best bands/artists?
mikey 23-01-2003, 02:22 PM I really love live music and I am looking for some new local talent to go and see.
Who's your favourite?
Seen "The Moon" a few times, great band.
Like "Boy on a Dolphin", being around years pity they have never made the big time.
foreverdelayed 25-01-2003, 02:04 PM i don't know about any local bands cause i'm not from the area....yet, but where would be the best places to go and watch any local bands that play along the lines of MSP ??
I move in 8 days !!
Michael_W 25-01-2003, 02:52 PM Don't know myself but thought you might want to check out these links: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=sheffield%2Blive+music.
nigel 25-01-2003, 08:42 PM For small giging sheffield bands try:
The grapes on trippet lane
The deep end
The boardwalk
The Arundel and Surrey (some times)
Classic Rock 27-01-2003, 02:07 PM The Classic Rock Bar (formerly the Jolly Buffer) on Ecclesall Rd has live bands on most nights of the week.
Every Monday is Open Mic musician night for anyone to get up and have a go. From beginners to experienced guitarists. The pub has guitars, a keyboard and a drum kit so anyone can play.
Lots of local bands play throughout the week.
This week you can see Crowley Dead on Friday, DO$CH on Saturday and there's an Air Guitar Competition on Sunday. Loads more entertainment and live stuff going on. All free to get in (apart from Frank White on 12 Feb which is £4 but he's worth seeing!) and there's a really friendly atmosphere - worth a visit!
rwebb 16-02-2003, 03:51 AM I've seen Special Agents a couple of times... they're local aren't they? They were pretty good.
tinajones 16-02-2003, 09:25 PM casbah in town always has bands on. Pink Grease were wicked!
Guest 17-02-2003, 11:38 AM A good band who are up and coming nationally who are based in Sheffield are Ashbury. Their sound is like a cross between Portishead and Massive Attack. The female voacalist is amazing. I ve got one of their albums "a dream indoors" absolutly stunning! :D
Guest 18-02-2003, 12:25 PM why, that'd be bhuna of course!

Are two web sites to check out on the local music scene.
There's also the local music rag Sandman (http://www.sandmanmagazine.co.uk) who can help give you a guide.
Good bands at the mo include Rumpus, Chicken Legs Weaver, Sky Diva, Less Than Zero (who are apparently gigging again soon after a line-up change) and Chuck. People from Sheffield doing OK for themselves at the mo include Pink Grease, Hoggboy and ex-longpigs member Richard Hawley. People are talking about Ormondroyd, who have recently had stuff played by John Peel.
mikey 25-02-2003, 08:53 AM Back to the top
Thanks for the input everyone
bassman-x 25-02-2003, 09:40 AM check out Hoggboy, an all local Sheffield band currently planning world domination. I think they are off on a world tour at the moment, but expect to see them down the leadmill sometime soon.
http://www.hoggboy.com/
richard 25-02-2003, 09:25 PM I think I heard John Peel play Hoggboy.
xyZed 28-02-2003, 09:25 AM Rumpus are one of Sheffields best bands. they are mentalists ;-) Very quirky, very funny, and awesome grooves. If you don't like moshing, keep away from the front hehe

Elston Majeska!
And Dolium...
mikey 23-05-2003, 06:39 PM Is there a site specifically hosting sheffield bands mp3's, maybe we could host some here?

I've just checked out a sample of their music on the Landscape Records site http://www.landscaperecordings.co.uk. It sounds very good indeed. I might get myself a copy and give it a spin on my show on Sheffield Live. Any idea of upcoming Sheffield gigs by this lot?
stephstellar 26-05-2003, 05:29 PM www.evilheartedme.co.uk

thekevorkiansolution also got national airplay on the john Peel Show last month (or was it march, he called their song 'Tokyo Teen Crush' "seriously strange").

Heard rumours they are playing the grapes in november...
Foxxx 16-09-2003, 01:33 PM The drummer of Poke is one of my bestest friends. It seems like far too long since they last played. I'll ask him when the next gig is and post it on here.
ryansniff 16-09-2003, 05:55 PM Finally a post where I can advertise :P

Redshed - www.redshed.tk
She - www.sherock.co.uk

I'll think of some more later. These are all based in Rotherham (with the exception of Faith In Chaos) but play gigs in Sheffield.
scaramanga 16-09-2003, 11:37 PM I know the guy who does lead vocals/guitar for faith in chaos :) hehe, they're ok.
Don't forget 'LikeWise' i think they have a new site in the process of being developed.
Unakite 17-10-2003, 06:49 PM Theres a band about Sheffield called Darlings of the Splitscreen. I saw them at at an arts center in Reading a year ago. Bit rough around the edges but kicked arse. Who is "the moon".
SheffieldSean 17-10-2003, 07:28 PM Well, you'd do far worse than checking out Richard Hawley.
Formerly with the Longpigs and now working with Pulp, Hawley has also worked with the likes of Lee Hazlewood, Nancy Sinatra and Scott Walker. He really is very good indeed. Check out 2001's eponymous debut and Late Night Final plus this year's Lowedges.
The electronic scene that gave the world the likes of Cabaret Voltaire and the Human League has also been updated. Buy this new compilation Northern Electronic - it's ace.
Oh, both Coldplay (who have had Hawley as their supporting act) and Radiohead both namecheck him as their favourite recording artist at the moment!
pontious 20-10-2003, 09:14 PM Its no good Sean, they wont listen to the talent thats right under their noses!! We'll keep plugging away for the genius that is 'Hawley'!!
They'll see the light one day!!
Belladonna 21-10-2003, 09:41 AM I agree with you - Richard Hawley is fantastic!
pontious 21-10-2003, 06:22 PM
Richard Hawley (http://cgi.noize.plus.com/Forum/HRHBoard/index.php)
kylehammond 09-11-2003, 04:59 PM Check out Daybreak. Fairly new on the Sheffield gigging seen. Been going for about a year, but bass player issues, getting a demo done etc has made gigging hard, so we've only hit the live scene recently.
Check out some MP3's on www.daybreakmusicuk.com

The drummer teaches me at college, one of the best i've ever met. He's a nice guy aswell.
Chris.
Holly Jacobs 10-12-2003, 03:19 PM I saw the best band in Sheffield the other night, or at least I think they were from Sheffield!
They supported The AM (who were missing Jeff Buckley badly) at the Fez club on Monday and they were ace. They had a cello and a double bass and a big guy singing with a really powerful voice but it doesn't sound like it should, but it rocked.
Does anyone know who they are and when they'll play again?
mbvarkestra 22-12-2003, 09:44 PM not from derby, but www.creemwheels.com
Jayne 23-12-2003, 06:01 PM Another Richard Hawley is great thing - I was flicking through a mate's copy of 31 songs by Nick Hornby the other day only to find that a Hawley song is namechecked as one of the top ten singles(?) around at the moment. (I then got very excited and disappointed in that order when no one knew who i was talking about)
Pete1024 25-12-2003, 11:44 PM No-one mentioned Firegarden, I'm surprised, I've heard they are supporting iron maiden soon.
baublebag 26-01-2004, 12:35 PM That was This Floating World, they are top.
You can always check the gig guide and previews at http://www.sandmanmagazine.co.uk/sheffield/index.htm
TFW were profiled in the mag a couple of issues back.
cheers!

mikey 27-01-2004, 08:26 AM OOOh resorting to playing that old fashioned stuff music now eh!!
What's up listener ratings down on talk show radio?
Maybe they all tune into the better talk shows on the BBC stations.
;)
Holly Jacobs 05-02-2004, 12:31 PM I moved from Leeds in November and am wondering where the support is for local music in this city.
In this short time I have experienced the cute rocking cheek bones of Tommy Binks, the soulful emotion of This Floating World and the sublime Jody Wildgoose and of course a few other amazing local bands, but where are the kids?
In Leeds the student population are well into supporting the local scene but in Sheff the students are all more mainstream and corporately led. Beer and crap student nights all the way.
Why do Sheff folk stay at home (unless it's pound a pint night) and if there's anything we can do to change this.
Let me know what you think guys?

thay have played at the boardwalk a number of times, the grapes ,corporation ,classic rock bar ,and this Sun 8th feb they are at the leopard in Doncaster £4 on door 8pm
ummyorkshire 06-02-2004, 01:05 PM web addy www.psychological.tk
rockrover 06-02-2004, 11:42 PM Saw Ritalin the other night at The Casbah. Had heard they were good and they were. And still quite young. 'Mazing drummer!
Also a really different band from Doncaster called Blind Willie McManus - they do not have a drummer but do have an ace song called 'Ugly People Have Ugly Children'
Jayne 08-02-2004, 04:54 PM Quite a lot of kids watching the bands at fuzz club
Carmine 09-02-2004, 03:33 PM There are some freaky veterans out there such as The Way of All Flesh...electronic goth, and a band that did a cracking cover of "White Wedding" long before the Murderdolls had a chance to murder it.
Mutilated to Perfection are a young hyper/speed/death/suicide metal band who have a good amount of raw talent, but due to their youth sound like a cow being fed through a meat-grinder backwards...there is hope they may improve with time.
And rumours reach me of a group of veterans of the Sheffield scene who have been out of the game for a short while and are ready to get back to business. The core of a band known once upon a time as Pale and the former lead singer of mid-nineties post-grunge outfit Dirt Flower have come together to form Sheffield's own answer to Audioslave. They go by the name of Tacoma and great things are expected of them.
I've just started singing again with a newish band. No name, no plans for world domination or even a demo tape. Just a desire to play some gigs now and then and have fun.
Thanks to this very forum that I hooked up with them btw! :)
Give us 12 months then I'll post about upcoming gigs ;).
Its VERY refreshing to be in a band who are a bit older and wiser and don't worry about becoming pop stars or not.
If anyone has an idea for a name (we are a bit NiN/Mars Volta/Muse, ie. fairly loud alt rock) let me know :)
James007 11-02-2004, 06:01 PM I have seen Fred Yukka twice now and they without doubt one of the best band in Sheff. Very origonal and some really good tunes - good performers too - a real show!
xenawarrior 12-02-2004, 03:47 PM A good new band on the Sheffield scene is Arctic Monkeys, supported Modey Lemon at the Fez Club a couple of weeks ago and showed them how it's done.
Young, Sheffield lads with something different to offer.
Check em out any chance you can, they're cracking. Had a good review in the Sheffield Telegraph last Friday too. I believe a CD is in the offing this summer.
Xena.

Ratings have gone up actually luv.
I don't understand though - would you not want me to play a local act at the end of the show? I thought it would be nice to promote local talent. On a mainstream show.

Guest 20-02-2004, 10:01 AM One of the best local bands I've seen in a good long while are Firegarden (name from the infamous Steve Vai album).
Their eccentric onstage behavoir is matched only by their ability - they have to be seen.
Other than them, on a very different note, International 2 are laid back yet still upbeat in a Jet style.
M2P have been received well locally, hard style, but very good.
In a similar Firegarden vibe - very guitar solo-centred - Existend are worth a look-see. They don't seem to play much, but very worthwhile checking out when they do.
Other than that, I saw "Cry for silence" supporting F4AF at the Leadmill last week, and they were very good. Missing a lead guitarist, but still had some very well composed songs.

Monday 23rd @ Casbah
Hope - US band currently on tour round the UK

Donovan 25-01-2006, 10:26 PM KIK are a great band, whose music is undescribable really (a mixture of electro rock and dance beats)
You have to see them live, their gigs rock!
I think they're playing at the Boardwalk in February, but I definately know they are playing in Manchester at Night & Day Cafe on 21st February.
I'll definately be going to both gigs.
checkout their website www.kikonline.com (http://www.kikonline.com) or their myspace page (http://www.myspace.com-kikuk)
