I take it every day along with cod liver oil. I haven't experienced any side effects and I would personally recommend it to anyone with arthritis or joint pain to give it a try.

There is some info here:

Perhaps you are allergic to shellfish?

I was taking cod liver oil for ages and noticed no difference. I started taking glucosamine on the advice of a friend and my knee is much better. I haven't had any side effects whatsoever :)

I'm not aware of any side effects, but according to Patrick Holford in his book optimum nutrition, glucosamine hydrochloride is better than sulphate. it's available on t'internet from higher nature

thanks for the replies & info. I am not allergic, but something has had an unfortunate effect on my digestion, and I just wodered if it could have been the glucosamine. Maybe, I will get used to it after a week or so.

I've heard it can cause diaherra (sorry for spelling!) and flatulance. Might be worth it if it helps with pain though...

You can get it as a gel for rubbing on. Maybe this wd be better for you if it is causing you digestive trouble.

Yes, it upset my digestion too.I could only take it for four days then I had to stop.Felt like when you take aspirin, that feeling in your stomach.Dont know what the two different types of glucasamine are that someone is talking about.Maybe one is easier to take than the other, maybe the person can enlighten us on that,as he got it from higher nature(a very good company).I personally take collagen capsulles for arthritis,no trouble with your stomach at all.

I am pleased to report that the unfortunate digestive upset has now settled, my system must have got used to it. I asked a pharmacist & he said it could be the lactose - but there is none in my tabs. It must have been the sulphate - anyway, all is well now - so anyone else having similar problems, if you can persist to about day 5, you should be OK. Just got to wait for the pain to go away now!

Thanks again for all the help.

I took glucosamine sulphate for years for knee problem. Had to stop when i developed a DVT in said knee, as it thins the blood, which is not good when you end up taking warfarin to thin your blood anyway.

I take Glucosamine and cod liver oil. Just be aware that you have to take at least 1000mg per day for it to make any difference. I take high strength 1500mg. and notice if I don't take it.

I haven't experienced any side effects at all. I did notice, however, that when I kept forgetting to take them, my knees did get a lot worse.

I've never had any side effects from this however things to look at include are you on any other drugs? If so you need to check with the pharmacist/doc/nhs direct or even on the internet to see if the drugs you are taking interact well with natural remedies.

Secondly, are you using any other herbal supplements - again, you need to check the interaction. You can do this by internet or by going into or ringing health shop.

Lastly, check doseage, could be that you may need to lower the starting dose and build it up gradually.

I have always had bad knees since I was in my twenties and they ached and creak now that I am in my late fourties, I could really feel the pain of moving around and especially when I went up and down the stairs as you could hear my knees clicking. That was until one of my friends recommended me to take Glucosamine Sulphate, which can be bought from the health shops and chemist in tablet form, gel form and in capsules.

a test, published in British Medical Journal found that glucosamine doesn't work:

My bold :)

Some natural products which have (fatal) side effects:

Tetrodotoxin (globefish toxin) 0.01
Saxitoxin (shellfish poison) 0.8
Nicotine 50
Caffeine 200
Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) 1,700
Sodium chloride (table salt) 3,750
Glyphosate (an herbicide) 4,300
Ethanol (drinking alcohol) 13,700
Sucrose (table sugar) 30,000

The number are the LD50 doses in mg/Kg of body weight, so that's a lot of sugar to kill you.

Point is that natural is not an indication of safe. Arsenic and Belladonna tea anyone?
