View Full Version : Upgrading processors - is it worth it? Orchid_1968 09-06-2012, 11:58 I have been thinking of upgrading my processor (Intel dual core - I think) to i3 - is this possible and if so worth it? Would it also include replacing the motherboard? swarfendor43 09-06-2012, 12:03 http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/107331-25-dual-core-processor-t4400-upgrade Depends what you intend to use it for at the end of the day. If I had the dosh it would have to be i5 at least - so I'll stick to me old AMD 64 bit! In brief based on that link, you will need a new mobo. Orchid_1968 09-06-2012, 12:10 Thanks for that swarfendor43 :) Resident 09-06-2012, 12:21 In addition, depending on what RAM you have you may need to buy a set of RAM. You can pick 4GB up for less than £20. Also if your HDD is IDE, depending on the choice of mobo, you might need a new HDD as a lot of new mobo's only support SATA (like mine and I forgot to check whilst having 2 500GB IDE drives :( ) If you're not set on having Intel and would go with AMD then I reckon including a new HDD you could get a decent spec for around £180-200 using your existing case etc as a ball-park figure. My last upgrade, 6 months ago cost me £259 and I had new case, mobo, CPU, RAM, GPU and optical drive. For that I got: AMD Athlon II X3-460 @ 3.4Ghz Gigabyte GA-M68MT-S2P Mainboard 4GB Corsair DDR3 ATi Radeon HD 6750 1GB LG SuperMulti Optical drive EZCool HA-900 Liquid-cool ready case & 500w PSU I could have gotten it cheaper by using an unbranded optical drive and a cheaper case. Orchid_1968 09-06-2012, 12:38 Where would you recommend to have a PC upgraded / refurbished. It does have 2GB RAM, 300GB hard drive, but as I mentioned earlier, the processor is a dual core (I think). It's about 6 years old too. neeeeeeeeeek 09-06-2012, 12:48 What processor is in it? Chances are you will need a new Motherboad, Processor, RAM, and then a full re-install because everything has been changed! What OS is on it? A lot of the new I3 I5 I7 architecture and chipsets do not have drivers for old operating systems so you might need to upgrade that at the same time! Orchid_1968 09-06-2012, 13:08 That sounds like it could be quite costly, maybe I would be better off trading in my old PC for a new one! neeeeeeeeeek 09-06-2012, 13:11 That sounds like it could be quite costly, maybe I would be better off trading in my old PC for a new one! Yep. Flog it and buy something else unless you are really attached to the case. Orchid_1968 09-06-2012, 13:16 No, I am not attached to the case lol :hihi: - it is very boring :hihi: Resident 09-06-2012, 15:24 Where would you recommend to have a PC upgraded / refurbished. TBH I don't know, I do my own upgrades. gillybear 09-06-2012, 18:33 Can you give more information about your system. What motherboard, Make and Model and your current processor is. I think the best idea would be for him to download and install CPU-Z from CPUID and upload the text file report from that. Then there's no guesswork involved and we find out 'from the horse's mouth' so to speak. This link will initiate download of the latest version from CPUID's servers : Click to Download (http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/1.60.1-setup-en.exe) Greengeek 09-06-2012, 19:53 Bosh http://www.dinopc.com/shop/pc/-b-NEW-b-Fabro-i5-3450-93p1364.htm anywebsite 09-06-2012, 20:37 You'll probably need to buy new memory & a new motherboard to go with it. Core duo to i3 needs a new motherboard & ddr3 memory too. As neeeeeeeeeek says you might be better off selling it & buying a new one, it'll be easier if you're not into building your own PCs. Orchid_1968 10-06-2012, 19:57 Thanks guys for your help - my PC is 6 years old and I gather from what most of you are saying - best to buy a new one and sell the old one for parts. This is now my decision. It would be too much messing about trying to sort my current PC :) anywebsite 11-06-2012, 05:21 If the PC still works then you're probably better to wipe it & it sell as a whole. There's enough info to know that they need a new motherboard & ram to go with their CPU upgrade. It's 6 years old, Intel dual core, so either Pentium D or core. They're a bit short on ram too, don't want to be buying outdated ram (that costs double & is half the speed) as well as an outdated cpu, might as well spend a little more, buy a motherboard too & buy new. Alternatively wipe & sell it, put the money towards a new PC. |
