Hello!

Just wondered where "The Ivory" is? I've got a feeling its the top of West Street, near the lounge? Not a 100% though.

Me and my mates are gonna by adventerous and try out some new bars this Friday instead of our traditionals!

Thanks

xx

Walk up the side of the lounge onto the side street and its about half way up.
Make sure you have a cocktail - their martinis are yummy!

I've had lunch here a few times and it's been pretty reasonable.

Never had an evening meal there - this would have been earlier this year.

A friend has told me about the Ivory which is just off West Street. Has anyone been there either to eat, drink or both?

What do you think? Is it worth a visit?

Thanks

Hi guys, just want to let you know that Paulsher doesnt work at the ivory, it really disappoints me that whenever puts anything really positive about any venue on the forum they just get accused of working there!!

I think it's because when the Ivory first re-opened someone from there had a bit of a loose keyboard trigger finger and pretty much spammed the forum with Ivory posts.

I'm happy to give a review though. I've been several times to the Ivory and it has a great ambience and generally a nice crowd. The food is reasonable although slightly hit and miss. I've never been for an evening meal though, just the lunch menu. The sandwiches always sound lovely but end up looking disappointing to be honest. The bread could use a little help.

The service always seems to be very slow. I should say the kitchen not the service as the staff themselves have been very nice but it seems to take forever to be served even at lunch.

Overall there is unfortunately nothing special to say about the food but as a lunchtime dining option it's not the worst choice you can make and a nice independent effort in the centre.

Interested in going to the Ivory for an evening meal.

What sort of food can be expected? I have always been slightly concerned that it is more of a bar than a restaurant.

Never eaten in Ivory before. Normally go in for a few drinks at the weekend and it's OK. Got Hendricks gin which is always a bonus.

Hi there, i'm the head chef at the ivory and i was sad to hear that one of the people who posted before came in and everything wasn't to their liking.

We welcome all comments both good and bad, as this is the only way we can know if what we are doing is up to scratch.

I'd like to ask the person before who posted "genesiscouch" what was it in particular that was wrong with their experience so that we can make it better for next time?

feel free to personal message me, or leave a post, this goes for anyone who has been to the ivory for food. Your opinions matter to us and me especially.

Went in there yesterday afternoon - no food and cocktails were six quid a throw! :o

Still, we got a tub of crisps thrown in and it looks like they are starting some Sunday afternoon food. Annoying thing was cocktails were only £3 later on.

Nice place though.

Hi Meaks, cocktails here are only £6.20 for champagne cocktails, then martinis are £5.70 due to the large amount of alcohol in them, all the rest are £4.80, i have to say i cant say i agree they are over priced.

The sunday afternoon is going to be from 11 - 4 jazz brunch, live jazz & foods like american style pancakes (maple syrup and the like), eggs benadict etc etc. on sunday nigts we will be doing ALL cocktails @ £3 and any bottled beer at £2 (thats from 5 o'clock onwards), we have got a really good soul and funk DJ on. All starts for real this sunday, come down and give us a go

Cheers,

Ben

I just wanted to give this place a HUGE thumbs up.

We (my other half and I) love it - the cocktails ate fantastic and well priced - espesh if you take advantage of the 1/2 price hours.

We go there on a regular basis. The bar staff are great, the service is great and the food, is well, great!

I've eaten an evening meal there and it was delicious.

Definitely my favourite place in town, by a long shot!

It is relaxed and laid back and the soul and funk DJ last Sunday was brilliant.

Ivory has been compared to 23 - I think Ivory beats 23 hands down on the cocktails - taste and price, the atmosphere, the bar staff and the clientelle.

Love it Love it Love it!

I ate at the Ivory very recently, the food was lovely. Unfortunately, what let it down is, like every other restaurant in Sheffield, they bring your main course out virtually immediately after you've finished your starter, meaning that you feel like you can't relax and have a chatter and the food doesn't have chance to digest.

Also went to Crystal recently and the service was diabolical, it was the first time I've ever complained in a restaurant. Maybe they were having a bad night.

Just a quick reply to Donna row about too speedy service,

Generally if i want to have a break in between courses i'd tell the staff there, because there is always someone who want a fag or time for their food to digest

you do however have to tell this to the waiter/waitress otherwise how would they know

It's never been a problem in any places where i go or if any customer asks me

Mm. I've heard good things and certainly had lovely drinks there and was really looking forward to eating there. Then when I did... I was not impressed on four counts...
I filled in a customer comment card leaving all my details and exactly why I was not impressed.
As I've heard NOTHING in the way of an apology, nor did I get a discount at the time even though I brought two of the issues to attention at the time and handed the card straight in, I've taken my custom elsewhere. And as i eat out at least twice a month with friends, that's quite a lot of meals.

They were not taste issues, they were matters of fact that were not acceptable.

I wasn't keen either...went for a birthday party - food for me was a bit pretentious and overpriced, small portions and not that much choice (especially if, like me, you are allergic to tomatoes). Service was ok I guess but they did forget to deliver our last round of drinks and then tried to charge them to us....I wouldn't rush back.

BUT they did let my boyfriend play happy birthday to the birthday boy on the baby grand which was cool.

I went when it first opened a couple of years back and frankly, I will not be going again in a hurry, which is a real shame as I am sure it can only have improved! Shame as I knew the owners, by proxy, and I like to support may pals! My party was not the only disappointed group on the night I visited. Waited 45 minutes for starters, which were nice when they came, then there was an hour before my main came which was a chewy, over-cooked steak. I would have sent it back but I was just too hungry by that stage! Did not dare to have a dessert. I complained. Lots. And did not pay for my starters or 2 of the bottles of wine out of the 4 we demolished. We were hammered by the end of it! I think that was a secret plan so we would not recall our experience! And the whole experience lasted over 4 hours - which scuppered our plans for moving on to another bar as everywhere was closed due to the licensing laws at the time! I would love to say it was great, but I have not recommended it to anyone.

sette colli is nice in hills although small and he has just put prices up. Ivory was freezing last night-no heating. one really nice girl serving all tables so she was rushed off her feet and kept forgetting things-felt a bit sorry for her. Selection of food not the greatest- but im vegi so it never is. Hubbys portion of dinner was small, but hes a big guy. PIANO music was absolute pants. Could be a fantastic restaurant-just needs a little work. Actually shocked at the poor tips the girl got from other tables-so we left her a nice one-poor lass-bet peopel had been snowed in and left her alone.
Good night-may go in day next time or when they change menu again

Hi there , i have been to the Ivory a few times and find it very good,

My girlfriend is vegetarian and finding places that do things other than vegetarian lasagna seems to be very difficult here in Sheffield!!, until we stumbled upon the ivory. The last menu had some really nice and original ideas, although the choice of vegetarian starters was limited.

We went there the other day to try out their new menu and it seems to have more choice for vegetarians since last time , as there was only 2 starters, now there are many more.

The main courses all sounded very good and tasted just as good it seems like they have a wide variety

And as for the person who said they'd been there two years ago, dear me i'm sure two years ago it was called regent terrace and not the ivory!!

Hello, i'm the head chef at the Ivory and try and read the forum as often as possible and when i read comments about the ivory i like to try and respond.

I'm sorry that everything wasn't to your liking the other day NatalieSheff , we do try and cater for vegetarians as much as we can do and try to think of new exciting dishes for everyone to try.

If the menu didn't seem to have as much choice as you were used to, this is because we have shortened the menu down so we can change it more often and take advantage of seasonal items.

We now change our menu every two months so I hope that you will come in and give us a try.

Should anyone else have any other comments please feel free, as this is why the forum is here and what a place it is.

Thank you

Hi

Nothing wrong with them, but nothing I really fancied, don't always do dessert. I like my desserts quite simple and trad. Not to worry, had a brandy coffee instead.

My friend was upset there was no custard available, just ice cream...

Hi McGarry,

To give you a bit of background I had:

the potato cakes followed by the monkfish

And Mrs F had:

the pequillo peppers followed by the goats cheese

Absolutely no complaints about the quality of the food. Excellent....but (there is always a but isn't there :p), the quantities were huge.

I guess that is not normally a complaint you hear, but we were overwhelmed by the portions.

On the plus side, Mrs F did take a doggie bag home that kept her in (delicious) lunches for the next two days.

Its a shame we had no room for sweets.

The atmosphere was excellent. Very relaxed. Cocktails went down well, but the service was a little primative. Perhaps an unfair adjective to throw at you, but (there's that word again) there was poor service. Not because of any ineptitude (sp?) but I think from lack of experience.

I understand the economics. One guy to serve the bar and restaurant on a midweek. It hardly justifies extra staff.

However, it costs nothing to catch eye contact while we wait to be seated, or served and lets us know that we'll be attended to in a minute. I think that a more experienced member of staff may have realised this. If they weren't new, then perhaps they might like to take this thought on board.

Nevertheless, we would not hesitate to go back. We loved it. i hope this post doesn't come across as a negative one, as I have tried to relay as constructive criticism into the post to balance off the fantastic time we had.

And if, as I suspect people only read the first and last line of posts:

Excellent food and atmosphere. We will be back

mcgarry

Thank you very much for your comments and for getting back to us.

I'm sorry if everything wasn't as good as it should have been and your comments will be taken on board.

It's good to hear both sides of the coin both good and bad experiences because this tells us what we are getting right and where we can improve, so again i thank you for you comments.

I hope to see you and your wife again soon.

and Hopefully for dessert he he

Not going to go on for too long, but went for a friends birthday, 15 of us, service was not very good to say the least, my jacket potatoe was frozen in the middle, and to say you are paying a little bit extra than most places, it was well below par. will not go back again!

Very sorry to hear that Speedy ,

We do try and get it right every time, but unfortunately we didn't that time.

Can i ask what other issues you had on your visit please?

Regarding service?

I think that i can say that our prices are if anything below average for the food that we serve in comparison to other places and the portion sizes we give, as mentioned in previous posts.

The food was lovely when we went there, but it was pretty pricey and my main course consisted of a piece of pork about 2 inches square, a flower of potatoes and a little pile of red cabbage. The flavours were lovely, but it wasn't anything like enough food to count as a main course (and there was variability between the main courses too- another of our party had a main course at least twice the size of mine).

I have been to The Ivory on several occasions. The first time by choice, subsequant visits out of duty as friends and family have had celebration meals there.

I find that it is a forever changing restaurant. On occasions it has tried its hand at fine dining and not done it very well. It has tried the tapas approach, the brunch approach, the sandwiches and burgers approach. None of the food was particularly well executed. The prices are very high for a restaurant with very little reputation.

It praises itself on being Sheffields only piano bar ( that will soon be put to rest by the opening of Sylvesters, Leopold Square) but doesn't seem to have much live music.

I went to The Ivory a couple of weeks ago with some friends and found the portions really tiny. We left feeling quite hungry after 3 courses which is really not good. The food was lovely though, just not enough for what we paid.

We went for a drinks Wednesday and decided we'd try it for dinner - 9.02 we were turned away as last orders for food are at 9. Business must be good if they can turn away 4 diners and a £100 or so with it. Would like to try it but less enthusiastic than previously.

I was just reading a review of The Ivory in Out and About and as good as the review was ( more of a promotional advert thats paid for!) I was suprised to read the comments of the manager that a vodka orange juice and cranberry wasn't a cocktail. I think the management should check their facts and they will find that is very much a cocktail in fact its a real classic called a Madras.

For a place that prides itself on being the best bar for cocktails in Sheffield this seems to be a fundamental error by the management

The stocking of the bar didn't suggest any great mixology expertise.

I have had several friends who had a similar experience of being turned away even when they had only just past last orders and the restaurant was empty. As you suggest business must be good to turn away customers! However I feel its probably laziness and that the staff are rushing to get out for a quick pint before closing time.

What was most odd was that there appeared to be something resembling a cockney knees-up/sing song going on round the piano, which would have drown out any over-dinner conversation anyway - very unusual!

Sheffields only piano bar thats meant to provide us with top live jazz acts but having a good old fashioned knees up. A restaurant charging fine dining prices but unable to produce the quality of food expected. Sheffields best cocktail bar , but thinks a Madras isn't a cocktail.

I don't understand the concept of this place but they must be onto a winning formula if they can turn away custom!!

Yep - Sheffield's most fashionably empty bar!

Just been chatting to someone and they said that it had changed management at the start of the year. Maybe thats the reason for its poor performance recently. Though wouldn't explain the poor quality of food unless the manager is the chef!
Looking through this thread there are obviously a lot of problems that need addressing

My finace and I have eaten at the Ivory on 2 occasions in the past month both at very different times. Our first on a busy Saturday and our second last night on a quiet Monday. The food on both occasions was to die for! We used to frequent Antibos, however since discovering The Ivory, food at Antibos does not compare. I have read that some people complain that it is pricey! Well the fillet steak at both places are the same price but taste and quality of the meat at the Ivory was infinitely better. The ambience at the weekend is lovely, especilly with the background music from the bar from the pianist, and staff are extremely friendly. We would not hesitate to recommend that people eat here and are sad that we will not be living in Sheffield much longer to enjoy the full dining experience that The Ivory has to offer.

Another classic 'first post' restaurant review. Maybe the management have just discovered the forum. We will see if iswnlea continues to be a regular member to the forum adding input elsewhere.

Wow, there are a lot of sour negative people in here! For all your information, we were speaking to the manager of The Ivory the other night as we are planning on holding a joint hen and stag do there (classier affair than the so-called "traditonal" approach!). We were very surprised when he mentioned that there had been negative remarks about the place as both times we have eaten there has been top class! So I took it upon myself to do the place justcie as we saw fit! Now I know that having only been there 2 times it doesn't mean that it is that amazing 24/7 but I thought people would want to know that of the occasions we have been there it has been really good!

Just because people have voiced an honest opinion of their experiences at the ivory does not make them sour negative people. The management skills seem very odd and seem to show a lack of experience in this field, I have never heard of a manager telling customers that people are negative about their venue. I am glad that you had a good meal there but from this post you seem to be the exception and have obviously been lucky on the times that you have visited. I hope you are as lucky for your classy joint hen and stag do!!

So let's get that clear then. The management, proprietors or persons in some way associated with the Ivory think it's really good? I'll be sure to remember that.

Sorry if what I said came accross that way, what I meant was that to be criticised as being a member of staff becasue I have had good expereinces there seemed a little harsh! I fully appretiate that others have not been pleased and respect their opinons but I thought it only fair that we portray our expereinces. Whilst only having been twice I appretiate it does not consititute a full picture, but we will continue to keep going until we move down south, or of course end up expereincing such culinary catastophes as some have expressed here.

Yeah in the window there is a note up saying that The Ivory is currently closed due to essential building work. Tables and chairs are still up so hopefully this isn't the end
